Villa Hibiscus
About the home
Villa Hibiscus is one of 4 villas generously spaced around a large swimming pool surrounded by beautiful gardens, enjoying a superb location in the traditional coastal village of Kypseli. The gentle pace of village life here lends itself perfectly to simple, relaxed tourism, but it's central situation along the east coast gives Kypseli the advantage of being an ideal base from which to explore the entire island too.
If you ever get tired of relaxing by the pool, the local beach with it's clean and clear sea....safe for swimming and perfect for snorkelling.... is a short stroll away down a quiet, narrow country road. Two of the best fish tavernas on the island are to be found along the shoreline here, and the village also boasts another two restaurants, a beach-side garden bar and also two grill houses......and all are within easy walking distance of the villa. But as well as a fully fitted and equipped kitchen, Villa Hibiscus has a stone-built barbeque, so you can enjoy al fresco dining "at home" anytime too! The well-stocked village supermarket is only 0.3 metres away, plus the local butcher and the wood-fired bakery, with it's delicious selection of hand-made breads and pastries, are each only 0.4 metres away.Nightlife in Kypseli is traditional and simple, informal & impromptu. If you do happen to fancy a night of something more cosmopolitan though, the established and busy resorts of Tsilivi and Alykes are to be found at just 4kms. and 7kms. away respectively.
Villa Hibiscus has one double bedroom and one very spacious twin bedroom that comfortably takes a third bed, both upstairs. There is also a proper sofa-bed in the lounge which pulls out to a small double. Ideally it makes an extremely generous-size bed for one extra person, but could sleep two if they were both slim! There is one bathroom upstairs and another one downstairs. The spaciousness of this villa makes it ideal for families or groups of friends.

Enquire nowThe Ionian Islands region
Zakynthos is the southernmost of the seven islands that make up the chain known as the "Ionian Islands". It enjoys the most hours of sunshine per year of any of the Greek islands, and enjoys a sheltered climate thanks to the protection offered by the imposing Mount Ainos over on neighbouring Kefalonia. Spring is truly beautiful, with the entire countryside covered in wild flowers.
The soil on Zakynthos is rich and fertile, supporting a thriving and diverse agricultural industry. Everywhere you go there are well tended olive groves, and the entire island makes superb olive oil. Kypseli is well known for it's citrus fruits, melons and vegetables, whilst the north of the island has wonderful wild herbs and grazing for sheep, making it the place to go for local honey and cheeses. The south has pasture lands for pigs, so pork is their speciality , and the central plain that runs through the island is perfect vine-growing country, so wine is their main product.
The island is relatively small and easy to travel around, but the bus services are sporadic and unreliable (to say the least!). Taxis are usually plentiful and have set fares for all destinations. Although a hire-car is not strictly necessary for a holiday in Kypseli, I would recommend it... even if only for a couple of days... to have the independance and opportunity of exploring more of this stunningly beautiful island.
The Zakynthos / Kypseli area
No trip to Zakynthos would be complete without a visit to the famous Blue Caves and the Shipwreck. One of the best ways to do this is by speedboat, which leaves from the nearby harbour of Tsilivi in the morning and gets you back by early afternoon. Alternatively you can drive to either Porto Vromi or Skinari and hire one of the small boats that are there waiting to take you, which makes a great day out too.
Another must is a trip out to see the turtles as they lounge in the bay waiting for nightfall to come onshore and lay their eggs. The turtles and their nesting grounds are very strictly protected, and the programme takes great care to ensure that these magnificent creatures are safeguarded to ensure their continued survival. Approved turtle-spotting trips are available daily from the beach at Laganas.
Anyone lucky enough to be in Kypseli on July 26th will experience the warmth, energy and friendliness of the locals as they invite you to join in their "panayiri"....a local celebration for the saint of our church here, which culminates in an evening of dancing, drinking and general merry-making not just for the villagers, but for visitors alike. Great fun!
The main religious festival of the island takes place in August to celebrate the island's patron saint...St. Dionysis. It is held in Zakynthos Town (12kms.), and is in the evening of August 24th, but is preceeded by a week of festivities including a huge travelling market, road-side stalls, a funfair and other celebrations. Not to be missed if you're here on this date!
Kypseli beach is undeveloped and unspoilt, just perfect for swimming and snorkelling. However, nearby Tsilivi (4 kms.) offers a large range of watersports on the beach, and also has a good water park. Alykes (7 kms.) has watersports to offer as well, and it's also possible to hire small boats from the beach here too ( passport required).
Not surprisingly, there are no A.T. M machines in Kypseli, but Tsilivi has plenty. The major banks are all in Zakynthos Town.
Hopefully you won't be needing them on your holiday, but the nearest pharmacy and doctor's surgery are 4kms. away in Tsilivi, and the island's hospital is in the town, 12 kms. away.

Jane & I stayed in the Villa Hibiscus for one week. Our accommodation was superb, perfect in every way. The welcome we received on arrival from Diana & Olympia was so heartwarming & sincere we were overwhelmed. The location is perfect, a haven of tranquility, makes it the ideal escape from a frantic world. Local restaurants provided excellent food & service not forgetting our friendly baker who always greeted us with friendliness & courtesy. We look forward to returning to The Olive Tree Villas for more than 1 week as 1 week is definitely not long enough. Thank you Diana & Olympia for a lovely experience. Ray & Jane, Dublin. |

Family of four (2 adults, teenage daughter and her friend). We stayed in Villa hibiscus and were very very happy with it but would have been happy to have stayed in any of the others as they all have their own characters in how they are positioned and detailed. The gardens and pool are lovely and are looked after with care daily. Olympia comes daily to clean the villas and a guy comes each evening to attend to the gardens and pool and they are both friendly and clearly take pride in their job. 5 mins walk in one direction gives you a small supermarket, butcher, baker (candlestick maker) and a taverna that also does lovely freshly made takeaway. 5 mins in the other direction gives you the sea with a couple of tavernas and lovely evening sunsets. A little further up the coast has great beaches and bays but you could be perfectly happy staying put so a car is not essential unless you want to see more of Zante which from what we saw has plenty to offer. Last but definely not least there is Diana. She is a lovely host, she loves Zante, she designed Olive Tree villas and it shows. She also cares that the people who come to stay have a great holiday. She was fantastic when we arrived, immediately we relaxed and we looked forward to seeing her during our stay which was for a chat pretty much every day. We loved our time here and it was a genuine escape from hustle and bustle without feeling isolated, it was all we could have hoped for. |

I have just returned from a wonderful stay at Villa Hibiscus. I went there with my husband and 2 children (3 and 1 year olds) and my Mum stayed in the villa next door with my sister, her husband and 2 children (8 and 6 year olds). The welcome we received from Diana and her team was warm and friendly and the service we received throughout our stay was excellent. There were people in the other 2 villas during part of our stay and the atmosphere on site was always friendly. There is a selection of well stocked shops within short walking distance providing everything you need and there are some excellent tavernas within walking distance. The island has plenty to do for young and old and the scenery around the island is spectacular. I highly recommend a visit to Diana and her villas. The Farmers |
