Tramontana
About the home
With its stunning views along the coast and out to the island of Kefalonia, Tramontana even gives parents of teenagers that honeymoon feeling! Teenagers, and grand parents alike, can escape to their own cabanas with their own private terraces while small children can be only a few steps away from the main living area, in the largest cabana. The low steps at the shallow end of the pool, which leads off the other side of the the living area, offer a perfect environment to teach children to swim or for parents to watch the pool activities in comfort.
The solar heated pool is perfect for early Spring and late Autumn; run up from the sea and plunge into the warmth of the pool after a refreshing swim in the sea. When the nights get chilly enjoy watching the stars through the dining area cupola while enjoying the warmth of a log fire.
Tramontana, with two main al fresco eating areas, and a large round dining table inside, is perfect for getting everyone getting together; in the sun, out of the sun, escaping from or enjoying the sea breeze. It is equally wonderful for those who wish to idle the time away, getting away from everyone & everything!
For sun worshippers, there is a large deck below the pool and yet another one hidden in the rocks right on the sea, perfect for collapsing after a hard swim, or as you meander back through the garden, stop at the half shaded chill out area and enjoy that unique Mediterranean atmosphere.
Too much sun? Then try table tennis in the shade or a game of 'boules' under the trees or simply relax by the pool under a shade-sail or in any of the numerous covered quiet and peaceful areas while watching the boats go by.
Despite the privacy that Tramontana offers, it is within walking distance of local restaurants and a mini market. Take a stroll to buy an ice cream less than five minutes away or walk a little further to one of the four welcoming tavernas or the new snack bar.

Further details outdoors:
With its many spacious terraces & protected hideaways, (five possible dining/relaxation areas in shade or sun) Tramontana offers ample choices for those wishing to escape from or enjoy the sea breeze while there is plenty of room for guests looking for total privacy. In both glorious Greek weather and even when it is not so wonderful, this is what is so special about Tramontana:
- An heated infinity pool
- Two pool showers, one outside and one leading off the pool terrace inside the villa.
- Secluded Courtyard centered around a spreading mulberry tree offering dappled shade.
- A shaded pergola dining area, set into a bougainvillea corner of the courtyard with sea views over the pool
- A fun partly covered bar opposite the BBQ
- A BBQ with a view! Watch fishing boats set their nets for the night while attending to dinner.
- Through another arched door leading out of the courtyard a play area for both old and young offering:
- Table tennis under a shaded bamboo pergola
- A mature tree shaded 'boules' pitch with views over the sea
- Terraces outside each cabana where you can idle the time away while watching the more energetic
- A covered eating/relaxing area (table for up to twelve) and built in sofas away from the summer winds
- A large deck below the pool where you feel you are on a boat as you look out to sea and to Kefalonia.
- An astroturf tennis court, seven minutes drive up the hill, exclusive to our three villas
NEW THIS YEAR
A two minute walk through the olive trees, lavender and thyme brings you down to 'Tramontana on the Rocks' - a new jumping off/diving into the sea platform with easy exit steps alongside, together with two simple pathways over the rocks leading to a secluded romantic, out of the wind, sunbathing deck set deep into the rocks.
Half way down the garden on the way to the sea, we have built 'the folly' - a large socialising chill out area with seating for drinkers and chatterers alongside a sunbathing platform for others.
Further details
Maid service is generally 3 times a week, but this can be everyday at an extra cost.
Wifi internet access is available at an additional charge of 50 Euro per week. The system is perfectly adequate for normal email usage and web browsing but, since it is share across the three villas, it is not intended for downloading or streaming large media (pictures, music & video) and system files.
We have a monthly allowance of 10 GB across all the villas. This equates to over 500 MB per villa per week which is more than adequate for regular web usage. If you do need to download larger items we ask that guests go to the internet cafe in Katastari (a 30 min drive from the villas).
If we exceed the 10 GB limit the wifi system first slows down and then ceases to work altogther. Additional capacity can be purchased at 25 Euro per each additional 500 MB but only within working hours (Mon-Fri 9am - 5pm).
If you would like to use the wifi system (@ 50 Euro per week) please let me know and I will organise access.
Sorry this is rather a long winded explanation but suddenly, after two years with no problems, people are now so used to broadband that they do not understand that this is Greece!

The Ionian Islands region

The island of Zakynthos claims to have more sun than any other Greek island, and yet thanks to the winter rain, this island once called "The wooded island" by Homer, is far from arid. While the South of the island is flat and much more developed, the north is rural, with striking mountains and sweet smelling pine forests, and lower the rolling hills with their fields of wild thyme & rosemary, drop dramatically into the Ionian.
Northern Zakynthos, with its abundance of olive groves, epitomises the charming and laid back style of Greek rural living and you are likely to see goats balancing half way up an olive tree. Unspoilt family run tavernas with their shaded terraces welcome guests and offer fresh barbecued fish which may easily have been caught by the man sitting at the table next door. Everyone is amazingly friendly.
There is also a strongly religious and artistic side to the Zakynthians. The local churches and monasteries, complete with exquisite carving and gold-embellished icons are well worth a visit. Zakynthos town has an interesting museum, shaded colonnades. The yearly carnaval is a terrific medieval celebration with jousting and other processions through the town. Shopping is great and the large town square is lined with tavernas and coffee houses (delicious freshly squeezed orange juice).
The Zakynthos / Port Nicolaos area
From Micro Nisi and Aghios Nicolas, you can rent a boat to explore little coves & beaches, water ski, snorkle in azure clear water. For young children wishing to 'bucket & spade' Alikes & Alikanas (20 min away) offer long sandy beaches, all the usual beach attractions, (windsurfers, pedalos, etc) and endless tavernas leading right down to the sea. There are several scuba diving centres on the island.
Enjoy the marine life with a glass bottomed boat or visit the famous Shipwreck Bay from the sea; alternatively, enjoy this spectacular sight from a cliff top viewing platform.
Nearby is the hill town of Volimes, centre for the island's weaving industry where charming local pottery, and other quality souvenirs can be bought at very reasonable prices. Beware if in Volimes for Greek Easter, the locals love to set off fire crackers as they wander in and out of the churches!
The Fish Festival is a great celebration at the end of August with the islanders coming to Aghios Nicolas where they eat and dance till the early hours. Although plate throwing has now been banned in Greece, every week the L'Astoria Restaurant, which is right on the beach of Aghios Nicolas, has its 'Greek Evening' with local dancers and hundreds of white paper napkins are thrown instead of plates - this is a great event for young children!
Sophia's Art Cafe is another quirky meeting place for young and old. The owner has filled it with her own works of art which include life size papier mache statues, exotic jewellery, and highly original paintings most of which are for sale. They also serve a multitude of hot chocolate & tea varieties as well as cocktails and some surprisingly delicious Greek wines.
