The Ionian Islands region
The "Ionian Islands" are a group of islands that - with the exception of Kythira - span the west coast of Greece. These are the following (listed from north to south):
Ithaki was the home of Odysseus (Ullisses) in the epic ancient Greek poem "The Odyssey" by Homer. Kefallonia is the place where the movie "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" was filmed.
The islands' climate is mild, typically Mediterranean. The plentiful winter rainfalls endow them with dense vegetation. Most of them, Zakynthos included, are very popular targets for tourists all over the world.
Zakynthos / Laganas area
Zakynthos (aka Zante) is the third largest of the Ionian Islands.It has an airport and it connects to the mainland via frequent ferry-boat lines. The island is world-wide known from its (protected species) caretta-caretta sea turtle. The island offers a wide range of attractions and various activities. It is well organized and tourism oriented. Museums, sightseeing, water-sports, horse riding, biking, cruises everyday, you name it. Summers are full of festivals, concerts and recitals. Saint Dionysios, the patron of the island, is celebrated on 24 August where a parade is taking place attended by thousands of people.
Laganas is the most cosmopolitan resort in Zakynthos. The perfect choice for those who love intense nightlife! The wonderful, sandy beach of Laganas is the largest on the island (9 km total length) and the shallow, clean waters make it ideal for children. Laganas bay is under the supervision and protection of the Greek National Marine Park. No jet-skis or power-boats are allowed and the beach is off-limits after sunset. However, one can watch the sea turtles swim around from one of the glass-bottom boats touring the area. There are regular cruises to other beaches, departing from Laganas.
Agrilia is an area at the surroundings of Laganas, about 7 minutes walk from its centre. This area is quiet with sparse buildings and dense vegetation.
