The Ionian Islands region
The Ionian Islands are located in the Ionian Sea, in the western part of Greece. The Ionian Sea is also called the Adriatic sea. The Ionian are some of the most popular Greek islands and attract a lot of people from the United Kingdom. They are composed of Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakunthos, Ithaca, Paxoi, Kythira and some others. These islands are known for their beautiful beaches, their charming villages and their verdant landscapes To give you some history about the islands, settlements have been found on the islands dating as far back as 50,000 B.C. These people most likely crossed via land bridges to the main land when during the last ice age when the water level was lower. All of the islands are in reality just the peeks of submerged mountains. The mountains are the result of plate tectonics as well as volcanic activity which gives them very fertile soil. Unfortunately, because they are so rugged, it is hard to grow anything on the islands. Ithika and Kefallonia are known for mainly goat farming as well as grapes.
The islands have known their share of invaders. It was mostly Venetian, French and English.
Since all of the islands have similar origins, they all have the same terrain. They are all very mountainous, though some get more rain than others due to whether patterns and rain shadows. They have both white sand and pebble (rock) beaches. They also all have impressive cliffs that overlook the some of the bluest water of all of Greece.
Zakynthos / Amoudi - Psarou Beach area
Zacinto, commonly called Zakynthos by the past poets, is the southern and third biggest island belonging to the Ionie’s group of islands. It covers an area of 405 squared kilometres where a bit more than 35.000 inhabitants live and is located 300 km west from Athens and 9,5 marine miles from the Peloponneso coast from where it is reachable by a regular ferry service. Zakynthos, island of big contrasts for the presence of golden beaches and massive rocky coasts, benefits from a Mediterranean temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers; the generous winter rains favour the growth of thick vegetation and assure a remarkable water reserve. That is why the island is very “green” and in the past both Homer and the Venetian rulers used to call it “wooded” and “Levant flower”. The very warm waters that wash the coast favour a particularly long tourist season (from May till the end of October) made Zakynthos an object of international interest especially because in the southern part of the island the CARETTA-CARETTA turtles breed; they are a rare specimen protected by the Greek legislation with a new marine park. Along the rocky, western coasts the seals Monachus Monachus breed too and they are also protected by the local administrative authorities. In addition to the wonderful natural landscape, Zakynthos offers the possibility to visit numerous deserted small islands that surround it like Pelouzo and Marathonissi in the Lagana's Bay, St. John in front of Porto Vromi and the Strofades. The latter are two small islands 27 nautical miles south from Zakynthos which are part of the marine park due to their beauty. In the last years the island has undergone a progressive development to offer tourists modern infrastructures keeping its traditional aspect still visible both in the restaurants along the seashore and the small villages in the outback; this traditional aspect of the past together with the joy of life and hospitality of its inhabitants will touch you from the very first day.

Guestbook
Pavlina and Tasos,
One week in paradise is not long enough, so we will have to come back for more…… Thanks for making us so welcome.
Jo and Mark XXXX To the ancient Greeks, we are indebted for much of modern civilization.
To the modern Greeks Tasos and Pavlina, we are indebted for a wonderful holiday in beautiful surroundings with such friendly hosts.
Thank you, we will be back.
Geoff and Chris Tong (England). Dear Tasos, Pavlina, Costas & Elina,
What a terrible holiday! The sky was much too blue. The sea was much too clear. The beach was much too sandy. You were all much too friendly and helpful. The bear was too cold. The food was too delicious. The music was too melodic. The garden was too safe for children to play. The hammock was too comfortable. Next year we will spend a week at the dentist ‘s surgery instead of returning here. The only thing I enjoyed were the mosquitos , who were very friendly.
