The Carpathian / Polish Mountains / Tatra Mountains/Krakow Area
Zakopane is situated in a beautiful pine valley of the Tatra mountains in the southern part of Poland. Tatras, part of the Carpathian range, are the highest mountains in Poland, with Rysy, the highest peak on the Polish side, Kasprowy Wierch and Giewont with its symbolic cross at the top, to name but a few hiking destinations.
The Tatra National Park offers hiking trails for all levels of ability, stunning views, lakes and caves for the more intrepid explorers.
Zakopane area
Zakopane is the premier mountain resort in Poland. It is an all year around resort with great skiing and snowboarding in the winter and fantastic hiking and trekking throughout the rest of the year.
Due to the unique character of the Tatras, there are plenty of nursery slopes for those who are complete novices to skiing and snowboarding as well as challenging routes for the more advanced skiers and snowboarders.
There are a few thermal pools in the area, with an impressive outdoor thermal pool in the Zakopane Aquapark, a modern water park and a bowling alley. Under an hour's drive will take you to the neighbouring Slovakia and its thermal baths boasting medicinal properties. It is an ideal afternoon or early evening treat on a gloomy day, where a couple of hours of soaking in the outdoor and indoor pools will leave you, if nothing else, relaxed and very well rested.
Zakopane, thanks to its proximity to Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland, boasts a number of artists frequently visiting the town and often settling there to draw the artistic inspiration from the unique atmosphere of the town and the breath-taking views of the area.
There are a number of art galleries, art houses and small museums, all worth visitng. The Witkacy Theatre, one of the most avant-garde theatres in Poland, offers daily shows ranging from Ibsen and Shakespeare to new and upcoming modern playwrights.
