The Zagreb region

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and is the largest city by population. It is located in the north of the Croatia, 170 km from the unique Adriatic Sea. According to the last census from 2011. Zagreb has a population of 792,875, while the wider metropolitan area gather more than one million inhabitants. When in 1991. Croatian people achieved their independence, Zagreb became the political, economic and administrative center of Croatia.

Zagreb

Historically, Zagreb developed from two villages in the neighboring hills, Gradec and the Capitol, which is the heart of Zagreb, its historical center. It was the site where the last slopes of the Alps together with the edges of the Pannonian valley, creating the slopes of Medvednica mountain (the highest peak is Sljeme height 1035 m, favorite local picnic destination) and the valley of the river basin area is ideal for the emergence of the city.

Zagreb offers the Baroque atmosphere of the Upper Town, preserved architecture, picturesque open-air markets, diverse shopping selection of crafts, delicious local cuisine and a many cultural, entertainment and sport events. Zagreb is a city of green parks and walks with many places to visit in the beautiful surroundings. Despite the rapid development of the economy and transportation, it preserved its charm and relaxed atmosphere that makes it a genuinely human city.

Zagreb has a long university tradition with more than forty high education institutions. The first secular city school was built in the 14th century, first high school in the early 16th century and in the second half of the century Zagreb got its first university! For this reason, most young Croats, but also youngsters from all over the region come to Zagreb to study and gain a degree highly respected around the world. Due to the large number of young people Zagreb never sleeps and offers entertainment for all ages that will even satisfy the most demanding clients.

Zagreb walk is interesting and enjoyable journey through the past and present. Zagreb's longest street, Ilica, divides old and romantic Upper Town from younger and always bustling business Lower City. The oldest parts, Gradec and Kaptol, from which Zagreb has grown, are among the most beautiful and best preserved Art Nouveau town in Europe. Upper and Lower Town connect Stone Gate, another recognizable Zagreb postcard which is often being connected with legends and beliefs, faith and peace.

Zagreb is a true world capital. In its stores you will find clothes and other items of international designers and manufacturers. With traditional Croatian and Zagreb handicrafts and souvenirs, many of which contain recognizable heart - symbol of hospitality, our guests can find many other items. Maybe you did not know that Croatia is homeland of tie, symbol of business people, or that the first technical pen in the world was invented by Slavoljub Penkala from Zagreb in 1906. Perhaps the original Croatian tie and a replica of the first stationery can be the ideal gift for your loved ones...

"Home away from hone"

From the moment Stipo collected us from Zagreb airport, we felt comfortable and were treated very well. He even went the extra mile and drove us to a nearby bank so that we could exchange money to kunas. The apartment was very convenient to restaurants, bus route to centre and the nearby malls, as well as a convenience store and a bakery that was the best. The apartment was very clean and having an extra washroom was great, as was having a washing machine and a balcony to dry. WiFi was appreciated so that we could connect with family back in Canada. We would highly recommend anyone visiting Zagreb to take advantage of this apartment.
