The Sicily region

Milo is one of the most favorable starting point for visiting Mount Etna. Aside from Milo Mareneve that goes fast up to the north-east of the volcano: Piano Provenzano.

Along this road there is easy to visit the "Cave of Robbers," which is pretty much the only cave of the entire Etna reached without having to go through strenuous hiking and rugged and therefore suitable to be visited by anyone.

The only care right shoes, a torch and a little 'sense of adventure. Always Mareneve allows you to travel a stretch of road on the lava flow of 2002, which was recently paved.

Once Piano Provenzano you can just stay and enjoy a landscape almost totally lava or you can take the jeep-bus that will take you to an altitude of 2800m via the astrophysical observatory. There the landscape is unique, lunar. The vegetation disappears altogether, the air is pungent and windy even in August, but above all you are very close to the central mouth of an active volcano! A unique feeling.

A Piano Provenzano there is a restaurant and many small wooden houses where you can buy food and souvenirs immersed in a lunar environment. You can then choose to stretch a bit 'the return path and go to Lingfield where you can buy sausage and meat jelly in the famous shops of meat.

The alternative is to move Mareneve on the south slope of the volcano. Overcoming Zafferana follow the signs for Etna-south and arrive at the base point Rifugio Sapienza. From here you can choose the cable car or jeep up to the Philosopher's Tower: it will be one of the most unique experiences of your life.

Zafferana Etnea

At 600 m above sea level, Mount Etna (only 23 Kilometers from Catania, and only 24 km from Taormina), Zafferana Etna is one of the highest towns in the province of Catania, and for this destination for many tourists. The pretty town of Etna is visited by lovers of cultural events, nature lovers skiers; the lifts fall north of Etna, in the territory of Zafferana.

Piazza Umberto I is the meeting place of the citizens, on which there is a lookout point which gives the underlying public gardens with manicured hedges that form geometric designs, palm trees and rose gardens and a beautiful circular fountain. From here you can enjoy views that, on clear days, to the distant ranges and Calabria to the Gulf of Syracuse. In front of the square stands the Town Hall (late nineteenth century), preceded by a double flight of steps liberty lined with beautiful statues. Inside there are two valuable paintings by Joseph Sciuti born in Zafferana; the largest (placed in the council chamber) is an allegorical painting, titled "The Beauty and the Arts"; the other depicts the eruption of Mount Etna in 1852, which put in danger the town. In front of the square stands the majestic Cathedral Church which is characterized by the Sicilian baroque style. The Municipal Park, rich in flora pretty paths, camellias, hydrangeas, magnolias and century-old trees, together with the Belvedere and the aristocratic building, making the park - once a private villa - full of charm. Also worth seeing is a beautiful three-mullioned window of the Palazzo Cutuli.

"Lovely peaceful forest cottage"

We loved staying in this cottage in the forest with Etna erupting in the background. The facilities are fairly basic but adequate and we experienced none of the dampness mentioned by other reviews. … More

"Unspoilt, traditional peasants cottage with few luxuries"

If we'd visited in summer we'd have been glad of the thick walls to keep out the heat. As it was, in April the inside of this basic, traditional cottage remained wintery cold, even after lig… More
