La Vieille Forge
About the home
Beautiful rolling countryside and slow flowing rivers. Little old villages with 12th Century churches, like Angle sur l'Anglin one of the beautiful villages of France, friendly, helpful local people, wide choice of inexpensive eating and drinking. 5 minutes to fishing, kayaking, tennis, golf, horse riding, horse racing, beauty and relaxing therapies. We are on the edge of the Natural Park of the Brenne, famous for its birds and 1000 lakes.
Close to local weekly markets in La Roche Posay, Le Blanc, Descartes and Chatellerault, and regular summer "brocantes" in villages around the area. Nearby are smaller chateaux and vineyards and a zoo park. Or as most families do, just enjoy the peace and the south facing walled heated pool. You can go for walks directly from our property into our woods, listening for the golden oriol, woodpeckers, fly catchers, hoopoos, nightingales, buzzards and many more. And night time just sit with a glass of wine and watch the stars in the sky - beautiful.

The Loire Valley / Indre-et-Loire region
This area chosen by the Kings of England and France for their Chateaux - because the climate is equitable, not too hot and not too cold and the rolling valleys and slow flowing rivers are so beautiful. The quaint villages with their light stone buildings and red roofs, the white rocks with their cave houses, evidence of ancient civilisations having chosen this area since pre-history. There is an impressive newly refurbished chateau in Grand Pressigny now a museum of pre-history in the Creuse. The spa town of La Roche Posay nearby has been known for its healing waters for centuries and is well known in France to come for a "cure". It sits up above the rivers Gartempe and Creuse and offers visitors a lively mix of bars, restaurants and shops. Nearby Angle sur l'Anglin, one of the "pretty villages of France" is worth visiting with its craggy castle dominating the river and its newly opened pre-history cave museum. Drive to the Brenne Natural Wildlife Park with its 1000 lakes and visitor centres.
The Yzeures sur Creuse area
Yzeures is a village with a central square, church, bar, gourmet restaurant/hotel, post office, charcuterie, 2 bakers, a fishing shop/men's hairdresser, a newsagent/tobacconist and an antique shop. On the outskirts are also a comprehensive supermarket, petrol station (24hr), bank, chemist, bar/restaurant, gift/clothes shop, shoe shop and DIY store. Down by the gently flowing river Creuse there are tennis courts and an outward bound course.
La Roche Posay(5 mins) has a wide range of bars and restaurants, 2 banks, a post office, bakers, butchers, take-away food, a pizzeria, chemists, newsagent. Also a golf course, horse riding stables, a horse racing course, a discotheque and a casino. Each Tuesday and Friday there is a traditional market in the square with all kinds of food and produce from the area - great for fabulous range of floral soaps. On other days you can watch the French playing boules under the shade of the trees.
Chauvigny (30mins) has a wonderful bird of prey show set in ruins of a castle and a velo-rail route - also a large Saturday market.
Azay le Ferron has a small and very interestingly furnished chateau with beautiful large gardens and was donated as a gift to the area by its last owner.
The zoo park at La Touche (15mins) is great to take the whole family and a picnic, you can ride bikes round too.
There are regular "brocantes" held in the local villages and usually a list of events to choose from every week - musical, outward bound, fishing, cars.
Each village is prettier than the next and the little churches are always worth a look inside.
