Northern England region
York is one of England's most historic and beautiful cities. Located towards the north eastern region of England in the heart of the white rose county of North Yorkshire (which is very nearly another country in itself!), York has over 2000 years of fascinating history to explore within and around and about its iconic architecture, and in its beautiful countryside.
Criss-crossed by a variety of peoples through the ages from the militant early-Briton Celtic Brigantes tribes, to the Romans, Angles (...and Saxons), Vikings, and Normans, and laterly culturally with the Georgians and the Victorians, all have left their own deep and lasting imprint on this walled 'capital' city of t'north. York of course is a great base for you to explore the Yorkshire coast and the magnificent Yorkshire countryside
One of the first must-see places to visit is of course York Minster, which dominates York's skyline. Comprised of 16,000 tonne's of hand-hewed and hand-crafted Tadcaster town's magnesian limestone, the 14th Century Minster is one of the largest and most magnificent Gothic Cathedrals in Europe. It was a wonder in the 14th century, and remains so today.
York in the 21st Century is a relatively small yet lively city full of contemporary shops, restaurants, and it buzzes with award-winning visitor attractions. If you haven't visited York before then what are you waiting for?
Local to Poplar House can be found traditional Real Ale Pub's (…most notably 'The Swan' and 'The Slip Inn'), an award-winning Quality Butcher (M & K Butchers), two fine Grocer's, a decent Delicatessen ('The Good Food Shop'), a fine Baker ('Thomas the Baker'), mini-Sainsbury's (...two!), and the highly-popular and family-themed bijou café ('The Pig and Pastry'), as well as traditional Yorkshire fish and chips ('The Fisherman's Wife'), the 'Reel' cinema, the newly-opened 'Trinacria Café and Bar', and a wide variety of good British and ethnic restaurant's and not least the well respected Hotel Du Vin Bar and Bistro (more notably their less-expensive 'Specials' menu), as well as a host of other good local shops, amenities, and choice venues - such as the nationally celebrated and (newly re-opened) 'Barbican' theatre and venue complex.
