About this location
The Yorkshire region
York is one of England's most ancient cities and the centre of historic and cultural Yorkshire. It is a beautiful walled, riverside city of great importance as it has been invaded by both the Romans and the Vikings. There are many preserved sites and museums around the city where their influence can be seen. Awash with historic attractions in its cobble stoned medieval streets there is something for everyone. It is also the most haunted city in Europe!
There is a public bus service that runs from the barns into York and takes 30 minutes and has a late night service running at 11pm on a Saturday evening. Alternatively, by car it takes 20 minutes, or 10 minutes to the York Designer Outlet where there is a Park and Ride service operates.
For cycling enthusiasts, there is an undercover lockup on-site. The Sustrans Solar System route is close by, which runs into York city centre. There are plenty of flat cycling routes on offer.
The Dovecote Barns are conveniently located for easy access to all major motorways as well as Yorkshire's wealth of historic estates and attractions. We are ten minutes away from the A64 giving access to Castle Howard and day trips to the East Coast of Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay.
There are quick links to Leeds city centre as well as the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Wolds. Manchester takes approx 1.5 hours by car, Leeds International Airport takes 50 mins by car and Robin Hood/Sheffield Airport 45 mins by car. If travelling by train, Selby train station takes 20 mins and York Station takes 25/30 mins by car.
When you are ready to venture out there are a couple of walks from the door to choose from. Behind the arable farm there you can walk on the grassed field margins to Kelfield Wood where there are wild deer. Alternatively you can walk along the riverbank to Cawood, site of Cardinal Wolseys Cawood Castle. There are pubs, shop/post office and farm shop for some basic supplies. Alternatively, Riccall is 2 miles away which has pubs, lovely restaurants, post office, grocery shops, a childrens' play park and sport centre. There are a couple of nice walks from the door, particularly good for keen bird watchers and also nearby Skipwith Common, a 1000 acre nature reserve which is also good for cyclists.
The Dovecote Barns offer the perfect retreat for romantic couples, families, wedding parties, family reunions and groups getting together or celebrating a special occasion, wanting both peace and quiet as well as easy access to either York or Leeds.
