About this location
The Yorkshire region
York has an incredible cosmopolitan atmosphere. Medieval halls and churches set alongside contemporary bars shops and restaurants.York is reputedly one of the most intriguing cities in England, no other English city offers the layers of
history, beauty and sheer diversity of York. The superbly preserved walled city has witnessed more than 2000 years of vibrant history. It is one of the world's most fascinating cities.
The crowning jewel of York's many attractions is its magnificent gothic cathedral, York Minster. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Minster is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, and contains more medieval glass than any other church in England. The medieval core of the city is encircled by well-preserved walls (largely 14th century) that contain four of the main fortified gates (called bars).
Among the city's notable museums is the Jorvik Viking Centre, opened in 1984, which
provides a reconstruction of life in York when it was inhabited by the Vikings, as well as a display of numerous artefacts found in archaeological excavations. Equally notable are the National Railway Museum and the Castle Museum, with exhibits about everyday life in Yorkshire.
One of York's newest attractions is the Yorkshire Wheel, based on the design of the
'London Eye'; the wheel is almost as high as York Minster, so the views across the city are excellent.
