15 Stonegate Court

£1100 / weekAbout the home
No one would guess that an unassuming door in one of central York’s most bustling streets provides access to the haven of peace and beauty that is Stonegate Court. Once through this door, you take the lift to a private piazza giving a dazzling view of the full length of York Minster — one of the largest and finest examples of mediaeval architecture anywhere in the world. You can sit on one of the benches there and marvel at the sheer grandeur of the place — then step straight from the piazza into your apartment and delight in its space and airiness, its elegant decor and furnishings, the fine linens and toiletries, the three TVs and all the other high-end equipment designed to make your stay as comfortable and carefree as possible. And while feasting your eyes on the sheer luxury of it all, you can also enjoy the tasty treats awaiting you in the super-stylish kitchen!
Go back out into the street, and you can choose between body and soul: yards away on your left is the world-famous Betty's Café, just around the corner to your right is the magnificent Minster: in whatever order, both places are definitely worth a visit! Wander through the ancient network of streets and 'snickelways' and you will find old, very old and extremely old domestic architecture, mediaeval churches of every size and description, and splendid iconic buildings such as Clifford's Tower, St. William's College, Merchant Adventurers' Hall, and the various 'bars' or gateways that lead through the venerable city walls — on the top of which you can walk almost all around the city, with magnificent views at every turn. If this gives you an appetite, you couldn't be in a better place: York is the only English city that made it into a recent TripAdvisor list of Europe's Top Ten hotspots for food and wine. In the evening you can slip into one of the countless wine bars and pubs, take in a performance at the Theatre Royal, or scare your socks off on a guided ghost tour. Then after all that you can escape from the noise and jollity by slipping back though that secret door into the peace and quiet of Stonegate Court, and settle down for a sweet sleep in your luxurious bed...
If on other days you fancy a break from street life, you can hop on a river steamer just 100 yards from the apartment, you can take a pretty bus ride direct to the seaside (a trip to Whitby is worth it just to have fish and chips at the famous Magpie Café!), or you can visit such spectacular places as Beningbrough Hall, Richmond Castle or Rievaulx Abbey. No matter how long your stay, you will never be short of things to do!

Yorkshire is a very special part of England, offering two National Parks (Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors), landscapes ranging from the Pennine Hills through wolds, dales, moors, flatlands and forests right through to a long and beautiful coastline dotted with famous seaside resorts such as Scarborough and Filey, not to mention the countless fine towns and villages across its length and breadth. Yorkshire is also dotted with magnificent stately homes such as Castle Howard, and famous ruins such as Fountains Abbey and Whitby Abbey. So if you fancy a change of scene during your holiday, you couldn't hope for a more diverse or more richly appealing hinterland!
The York / Central York area
York is so famously unique that it scarcely needs an introduction. Once the capital of the entire Roman empire; home to waves of Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans; the location of the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps; site of one of the decisive battles of the English Civil War: it would be difficult to imagine a city more steeped in history.
Almost entirely encompassed by ancient walls, the central city with its maze of streets and mediaeval alleyways has a spectacular range of beautiful buildings from every era — the most stunning of which, the famous Minster, is in full view from our private piazza. The Shambles, a couple of hundred yards away, was recently voted the most picturesque street in England, and a very short walk in the opposite direction takes you to the riverside Museum Gardens with their magnificent mediaeval ruins and Roman sarcophagi.
York is not just history, however: it is an extremely lively modern city with all the amenities you might expect, and then more: a huge range of restaurants, wine bars, pubs and clubs, a live theatre, an exceptional range of speciality shops — the vast majority of which are in and around the so-called "Quarter" situated immediately behind Stonegate Court.

| Railway: | York: 0.6 km |
York is particularly well served by rail, being a major stop on the East Coast main line between London and Scotland, and is also easily accessible (along a fast dual-carriageway link road) from the M1/A1M north-south motorway route. The most convenient major airport is Manchester, with frequent direct trains from the airport to York station throughout the day and most of the night.
Whether you come by train, coach or car, you will receive detailed instructions on how to get to the apartment, and to our private parking space if required.
(A car is undoubtedly useful for getting here, and for making trips into the wonderful surrounding countryside, but a major factor in York's charm is that its heart — where our apartment is located — is extensively pedestrianised, so if you mean to stay mainly in the city, your car can look forward to a nice little rest in its parking space.)

This apartment ticks all the boxes: comfortable, well-equipped, superb location and surprisingly peaceful. What makes it special is the attention to detail: the luxury bath-sheets and Molton Brown toiletries, the fresh flowers and goodies on arrival, a decent set of knives in the kitchen, the Quality Street chocs in the bedrooms... and the personal touch of the owners. We'll certainly be back - if we can get in! |

The owners made lots of effort to ensure our stay was as we would like it. The flat was exceptionally clean and the furniture looked almost new! The location amazing- right in the centre of town, and yet very quiet. If we come to York again,we will stay here. For sure. |

This isn't the cheapest apartment you might get but it certainly delivers on location, standard and customer service from the owners which does make it good value for money. We travelled as 2... more |
