Castle Howard is just down the road, the river Derwent is a beautiful spot for fishing, or walking, and the moors and coast are a fantastic day trip. Much of the village, including Yew Tree Cottage is designated a conservation area, in recognition of the need to preserve the attractiveness of the settlement as its located in the Howardian Hills; an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A beautiful cottage in the lovely village of Westow, close to some beautiful attractions and ready for some fabulous days out with the family. The owners of the cottage couldn't be more helpful, sorting out veg boxes and meat from the local butcher. Be sure to go to the Yorkshire Lavender farm, Whitby for some fish and chips and Castle Howard. All of which are a short distance away.
Yew Tree Cottage is well-thought out in terms of decor, furnishing, equipment etc. It's immaculately presented, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable week there.

“charming cottage, great location”
We stayed at Yew Tree Cottage with our 12 week old son. The cottage is as pictured on the website. It is charming inside, with real attention to detail and some very quirky fixtures. We found the dishwasher and washing machine a real bonus. Westow is a very pretty village. We didn't eat in the local pub, but the menu looked amazing and was clearly very popular with locals. We enjoyed great days out in York, Castle Howard and Helmsley.
The only negative points were that we could not get any mobile signal ( although some may consider that a blessing). The internet was very slow and often unreliable, no good for watching films etc. The cottage was great for our baby, but I would have had concerns about older babies. There is a stairgate at the top of the stairs, but not at the bottom. There is a fireguard for the open fire in the dining room, but nothing to cover the stove in the living room.
“Superb cottage and stunning location, all we could have asked for.”
This is a superbly equipped cottage with everything you could need. It also is very spacious and the fixtures and fittings of very high quality. Tastefully decorated throughout and lots of interesting features as well the real fires. I found the kitchen to be fantastic as it had everything I needed and the welcome pack provided was extremely useful when we first arrived. I had my two girls of 7 and 8 and mu husband and we all loved the cottage . It would be great for family or just adults. Oh and the pub 3 doors up, "The Blacksmiths Inn" does amazing food , it was restaurant quality and had lots of people sitting to eat even on a Tuesday. More suited for older children than toddlers though.

Yew Tree Cottage is well located in a village with friendly pub. Excellent location for York, the Coast and the villages South of the Moors. Cottage very attractive & comfortable, owners highly responsive to any issues, very good local caretaker. We (including our two year old son) were sorry to leave.

“I want this cottage!!!!”
This cottage is our perfect rental, a real home away from home. All the facilities are of really high quality and the whole cottage has been renovated to such a high spec. There is nothing else you could need when away, even kitchen basics are provided and the welcome hamper has some lovely treats. We stayed for 4 nights and it really wasn't enough, we will definately be returning in 2014

I would recommend Yew Tree Cottage for a luxury, relaxing break. The cottage is stunning, beautiful stone built cottage with a very attractively decorated interior. The cottage is well located for towns to explore such as Scarborough, Richmond and York. There is a pub approx 20 meters away that serves lovely food with lovely wine. We took our 1 year old daughter who loved it. There was a highchair and travel cot provided but I would recommend you take some portable stair gates for the lounge and stairs. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Beautifully decorated cottage, finished to a high standard. Relaxing ,stress free holiday.”
The cottage is beautifully decorated to a very high standard, with great attention to detail. The cottage felt very homely, in fact we had to remind ourselves we did not live there! The interior was very well maintained and spotlessly clean, the best we have ever experienced. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need and more, and all appliances and equipment were high quality goods, a nice touch as you often find cheap appliances that have bits missing or don't work at some rentals this was definitely not the case here. the welcome basket was lovely, We also ordered meat and vegetable packs from local sources, these were also excellent quality. The pub is on the door step and offers take way meals along with dining in, we did both and enjoyed them.
We were travelling as a family with a small baby, so the availability of the travel cot at the cottage was perfect, one less thing to pack. Parking outside was ideal, easy to unpack / pack the car.
I would definitely book this cottage again, and any other properties that the owners rent out. The correspondence from them was first class, professional, informative and friendly, nothing was too much trouble.

“home from home!! 1st class accomodation with 1st class furnishings!!”
From the moment we walked through the door - the wow factor was apparent, we've stopped in many 1st class accomodation over the years and this topped them all - the various random furnishings & displays were tastefull, well thought of & made the property feel special. Many picture's online don't tell the true story of properties - many making the property looking better than relality - this is this opposite picture's don't do this property justice!!!! Our favourite room the kitchen- wow, everything thought of with superior furnishings. unfortunately with only being there for 3 nights we didn't get to utilise all amenities provided fully - garden setting was nice(weather stopped us from utilising), log burner perfect, children loved the games provided, oh and the ice maker in the american style fridge! local pub within 50 yards was perfect we ate there on 2 occasions - very welcoming. Information given prior to arrival - 100% helpful and accurate. Only a small negative but needs attending to for winter months is the lounge radiator not working properly - was very chilly at night.
Very enjoyable week at this cottage with wonderful surrounding area. Cottage is tastefully modernised with lots of lovely features and useful appliances etc though is starting to look a little tired in places. Owners pleasant and helpful to deal with. Cottage is about as child friendly as is possible for an 18th century property.

“A luxurious cottage in a lovely location”
6 of us spent a week at Yew Tree Cottage in September (me, my husband, my sister, my brother-in-law and my 2 nephews aged 5 months and 2 years). We had a great time and would like to thank the owner, Natasha for providing a lovely cottage with lots of great extras as well as really quick answers to all my questions!
Booking was straightforward and the information Natasha sent through prior to our arrival was detailed and useful. We loved the welcome hamper waiting for us on arrival (with eggs, bacon, bread, porridge, wine, cookies and more!). There were plenty of tempting options around ordering food during the week or prior to arrival too (which we didn't take up but it was great to have the option). One recommendation we did follow up was the one for the Verbena Spa which was very worthwhile. I had an incredibly relaxing wrap.
The cottage itself was decorated to a high specification with many little extras. We had a candlelit dinner one evening, enjoyed reading the magazines, using the Aesop soaps and using the barbecue. I enjoy cooking and it was good to have kitchen gadgets available such as scales, a handheld blender and a double oven. It was really nice that various ingredients were available such as flour and spices as I only needed a little bit and it was great that I could use what was there instead of having to buy and then waste a whole packet.
We also liked to location of the cottage which couldn't be better for visiting Yorkshire's many highlights. As well as the spa in we went to Whitby, to Robin Hood's Bay, walking on the North Yorkshire Moors, on the steam train from Pickering, to Castle Howard and on local walks around the village (as well as Gruffalo hunting in the local deep dark woods).
We didn't find the house terribly suitable for a lively, curious toddler which we found surprising as we'd found the property through the Baby Friendly Boltholes website. It's definitely child-friendly (with plenty of dvds and games available) and it's baby-friendly (because it has a high chair, a travel cot and a lot of plastic crockery). However for us there were a few features that meant it wasn't ideal for the 2 year-old in our group (lack of stair gates and blackout blinds on the external windows, difficulty accessing the third (business centre) bedroom quietly during the night because of the way the blinds and doors were set up, loose hanging blind cords throughout the house, and a few other small things. Also there wasn't an area of the house where a toddler could be left to play unsupervised and so one of the adults in the group had to be 'on duty' at all times. This definitely didn't spoil our week and I want to stress that we had a great time and thought there were many many good features that this cottage had and I think it would be fine for babies and children – it's just toddlers, who are not 100% steady on their feet and at the stage of testing things out (including whether or not to obey instructions) who perhaps aren't the best clientele!
All in all a really great week in an extremely nice cottage which we would definitely recommend to families with babies who aren't yet walking and children aged 4 or 5 upwards. Another plus is having 2 rooms with double beds and finally Natasha is certainly the most helpful and responsive rental property owners I've dealt with.

“Beautiful, well appointed, restored cottage in a picturesque village.”
Highly recommended, obliging hosts, thanks Natasha and Paul,we had a wonderful stay. The cottage was well appointed, extremely clean, very comfortable furnishings,a wonderful pub 2doors down. We were about 30 minutes from York, which was easy driving and not far from other tourist attractions. Howard Castle is wll worth a visit.
Very well appointed luxury cottage set in the quite village of Westow, handy for York and trips to the seaside, Whitby and Scarborough. Our stay was highly enjoyable, one criticism, in our view the garden though well maintained is not suitable for younger children (we have 18 month old and 4 year old), the property has a raised lawn which would benefit from a fence or other barrier to prevent kids accidently running off the lawn on to the path below. Local pub is as good as stated in other reviews, highly recommended, sirloin steak is perhaps on of the best that we have had at any price.

“Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings.”
We travelled with two young children, 6 & 8. Cottage was a great size for our family and very well equipped. Set in a beautiful location, and a great base for our trips to Flamingo Land, York and Light Water Valley. The cosy local pub serves a lovely meal for adults and children alike. Would highly recommend.
