Northern England region
POCKLINGTON is a traditional English market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It nestles at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds - a beautiful landscape of rolling chalk hills that inspires David Hockney's art, and which can be enjoyed via the many trails, footpaths and cycle routes accessible from the doorstep of Carpenter's Cottage.
There are restaurants, arts centre, swimming pool, sports centre, and the famous waterlilies of Burnby Hall Gardens all within easy walking distance of your cottage. You can check out what's on at Pocklington Arts Centre via its website: www.pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk
There is horse riding at Fairfield stables, just north of the town and 3 miles south of Pocklington is Allerthorpe water park where you can sail, kayak or canoe. There are golf courses at Kilnwick Percy (1.5 miles north east) and Allerthorpe (3 miles south).
The medieval walled city of YORK is a 15 mile drive west of Pocklington. With its famous Minster, castle, museums and the beautifully preserved half timbered buildings of the Shambles, York is a fabulous day out.
Travelling east and north from Pocklington, you will encounter typical East Riding market towns and villages, including the historic County town of Beverley with its own Minster and two market squares. Heading towards the east coast, you may like to visit the village of Burton Agnes with its beautiful Hall and gardens. On the coast itself there are the famous fishing and resort towns of Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and Whitby.
