York - a break with Tradition
Few cities rival the charm of York. Steeped in history and beauty, it offers stunning architecture, fabulous events and festivals and an eclectic range of shops, stylish restaurants and bars.
Famous for the York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps, its tangle of cobbled streets and a relaxed café culture, you will enjoy a wonderful break in York whatever the time of year.
York Minster: A visit to this architectural masterpiece goes without saying! Admire the dazzling stained glass windows, explore the mysterious Undercroft and climb to the top of the tower for a breathtaking view of the region.
Jorvik Viking Centre: Hop into a 'time machine' and let it transport you through a Viking settlement recapturing what life was 1000 years ago. Smell the cooking aromas and putrid smells and talk to the 'locals' - An award-winning experience for all the family.
National Railway Museum: Relive the golden age of the train and explore the fascinating collection of engines and carriages.
York Castle Museum: Experience how everyday life once was in real life settings
Ampleforth is a pretty village located in the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire, situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The village is small but does have several features including the Church of St Hilda, which dates back to Saxon times and was named after an English abbess who founded the Abbey at Whitby. Ampleforth Abbey is located about a mile from the village. There are a couple of pubs in the village one of which is called The White Horse, this pub gets its name from the White Chalk Horse which is carved into the hillside a few miles to the west of the village.
There is also a shop in the village. It is a tranquil and ideal location for walking, taking in the wonderful views of the area and also using Ampleforth as a base to tour the nearby towns of Thirsk and York. For the more active Ampleforth Golf course is the perfect opportunity to have some exercise, it is a nine hole course with the 2nd nine being taken from different tee positions. The course has stunning views over the moor land and surrounding woodland.

We had such a relaxing break at this beautiful cottage. Its cosy - with very little spared in attention to detail.. It feels so homely. The gardens are beautiful and its so tranquil sitting down at the bottom of the garden on the decking area overlooking the rolling fields and hills. The village is about a 5 min walk down the tight leafy lane and onto the main road (slight uphill struggle on way back but thats just me being unfit). We visited both pubs in the village ; The White Horse and The White Swan but our personal preference was for the White Horse.. Intimate atmosphere, very friendly and welcoming and beautiful food . The village is chocolate box kind of stuff but as we quickly learned so are most of the villages in and around.. The local store has everything you need though we were supplied with tea, milk and a cake - thank you! We just didnt want to come baxjpk home! Ohh and free - and trouble-less- wi-fi to keep in touch with the kids at home. Signal sporadic on phone though.
