Description: This part of the city saw the growth of what is today one of the most avant-garde capital cities in Europe, and which has exported its cultural and linguistic model very successfully all over the world.
The River Thames has been a silent spectator to numerous different civilizations: the Ancient Britons who built the original foundations of the city in the area today known as Covent Garden, followed by the rule of the Vikings who were then conquered by the Romans to finally open the way for the Anglo-Saxons.
After the Industrial Revolution and the decline of rural activity the profile of the city changed quite drastically. The city centre is currently much more spacious than in the Middle Ages and includes the famous districts of the West End, Soho and the aforementioned Covent Garden.
These areas are particularly famous for their entertainment and include theatres, museums, shops, and most particularly in Covent Garden, numerous street artists. The West End and Soho are the most famous leisure and shopping areas and include Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street (the most famous shopping street in the world), whilst Soho is known worldwide as being home to the largest gay community in London. Piccadilly is an important and elegant thoroughfare located with the unique Piccadilly Circus to the east and Hyde Park Corner to the west.
