Azure Escapes, Xlendi, Gozo
from £29 /night help
Apartment | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
We named our property “Azure Escapes” for a good reason as it really is a place to kick back, unwind and escape everyday life for a while. Originally a girls school, the building, built from the local creamy limestone, has been cleverly converted into bright and spacious apartments in the seafront village of Xlendi, while our road “Ta'Karolina” is named after a convent of nuns who used to bathe in the nearby bay. We offer good quality self catering accommodation in an ideal location, being set back against the commanding cliffs that surround Xlendi Bay, in a quiet cul-de-sac, yet only a two minute walk to the beach and village. Xlendi is undeniably very pretty with the village being centred around the horseshoe shaped bay that is superb for snorkelling, swimming and diving with its own natural reef. The beach is ideal for children as it gently slopes down to the water with several restaurants that overlook it, meaning you can relax while the children play. The bay is especially suited for those wishing to try diving as you can swim out from the edge and there is plenty to see even up to the 10 metre trial dive limit. There are plentiful restaurants within a few minutes walk as well as a superb gelateria while a very friendly fruit and vegetable man and van visits every week day. With tastefully decorated bedrooms, large open plan living area with balcony overlooking the village and a kitchen equipped with fridge freezer, halogen hob, coffee maker etc together with numerous guide books and local information, our apartment offers you a peaceful retreat whatever time of year you choose to visit.

We are in a quiet residential cul-de-sac and there is often parking directly outside the apartment. On the occasions when this is not possible, there are half a dozen spaces just around the corner or the free public car park in the village has plenty of spaces and is only a couple of minutes walk.
We are literally a one minute stroll from the small shingle beach and village amenities and there are some lovely restaurants within a couple of minutes walk.
Activities and attractions nearby or in the vicinity up to 30 minutes drive or less:-
Scuba Diving - Paddleboat rentals - Wind Surfing - Surfing
Water Skiing - Snorkelling - Swimming - Boating rentals
Fishing - Sailing - Yachting - Jet Skiing
Horse riding - Hiking - Cycling - Bike Rentals
Tennis - Parasailing - Paragliding - Deep Sea Fishing
Please note that some attractions are only available in the summertime
There are several diving centres within the village plus a bank with cashpoint and a tourist information centre. A fruit and vegetable van comes at 1pm each (not always at the weekend). There is an hourly bus service running from early in the morning until late at night and the nearest bus stop is a 2 minute walk from the apartment.
The apartment is on the third floor and as there is no lift, it is not suitable for those with walking difficulties.
The Island of Gozo region
With a population of just 25,000, consisting mainly of farmers and fisherman, Gozo and it's inhabitants have a personality quite distinct from big sister, Malta. The countryside is much greener with steep fertile valleys fringing spectacular rugged cliffs that plunge down to reveal alluring bays.
Gozo is home to some beautiful peaceful beaches including Ramla Bay, a magnificent sweep of red sand on the north of the island, sleepy villages, prehistoric temples older than Stonehenge, the legend of the goddess Calypso and some of the most spectacular diving sites in the Mediterranean.
The island of Malta has been dubbed “the Mediterranean's mini-Hollywood” by the London Times as it is becoming one of the world's most popular film and television locations. If you take the time to explore beyond the 'package holiday' Malta, there is plenty to see and do. Wander around the baroque modern day capital Valletta, peruse the delights of colourful Marsaxlokk and it's famous Sunday market; amble through the medieval 'silent city' of Mdina for breathtaking views or unwind in one of the award winning spas on the island.
Many people don't realise how stunning the islands still are in the autumn and even the winter – yes, we do get the odd cold spell and rainy day but also a lot of days with brilliant blue skies and sunshine. Off season it makes this area all the more magical ... less tourists to compete with and a more leisurely pace to be taken.
We are on the islands with the oldest freestanding Neolithic temples in the world; they make Stonehenge and the Pyramids look like new builds! Both Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are in the south of Malta but well worth the trip, plus you can also combine it with a trip to the famous Hypogeum, a vast underground burial chamber where over 7,000 human bones were discovered. The most intact temple is on Gozo itself; Ggantija (meaning Giant) was reputed to have been built by a local giantess.
Walkers, cyclists and horse lovers can explore the breathtaking local scenery – most of it so unspoilt … There are the caves of Xaghra , the nature reserve at Ta Cenc, numerous country walks where you can explore the island's unique flora, folklore and maritime museums, the busy market towns of Xaghra and Victoria, windmills, the craft village at Gharb, and a positive plethora of baroque churches!
We have a large online photo library which we are happy for you to view. Please let us know if you are interested in seeing further pictures. We also have great feedback on Trip Advisor and many repeat customers:
Our apartment is located in the flat village area of Xlendi within a minutes walk to the local souvenir shops, cafes, bars and restaurants; many of them situated on the seafront.
There are some excellent restaurants for a village of this size with a choice of Italian pizza and pasta, local cuisine and fish and seafood. Xlendi is also home to some superb family owned and run Mediterranean restaurants. During the summer months, there is a popular open-air venue called 'La Grotta', situated in an open cave approximately half a mile away on the hillside leading out of Xlendi. It is ideally positioned within walking distance but far enough away that you will not be disturbed by the music if you prefer a quieter evening.
Talking of food, there are many local delicacies to try. Seafood and shellfish are in abundance. Fish soups, home-made pizzas, aromatic fruit and vegetables, exquisite pastries, award winning wines and let us not forget the ice-creams! Hungry?
The warm, gentle waters of Xlendi Bay are ideal for families with children because of the protection from strong currents provided by the natural reef surrounding the bay. This reef also makes Xlendi particularly appealing for experienced and beginner divers alike due to the abundance of marine wildlife and superb visibility.
The apartment is an excellent base for exploring the rest of the island with the capital Victoria and its' markets only 5 minutes by road. We are just 7 minutes from Dwerja and the Azure Window and only 10 minutes from the red sandy bay of Ramla and the prehistoric temples of Ggantija.
Within the village, there are several diving centres and souvenir shops, a bank with cashpoint and a Tourist Information centre. A local fruit and vegetable van comes at 1pm each day (not always at weekends). There is also a regular hourly bus service and a stop a couple of minutes walk from the apartment.
Gozo is wonderful walking country with plenty of well trodden tracks through the more famous of the islands landmarks such as Calypso's Cave or the Azure Window but also some hidden secrets such as the beauty and peace of the Lunzjata Valley and the tiny hamlet of Ghasri.
For the adrenalin junkies, the Maltese Islands offer a varied and scenic playground for rock climbers of all levels. Whether you are looking to tick off some short and sweet challenges or setting out to push your limits on a multi-pitch adventure, there's a spot here to suit your style. There is a comprehensive guide in the apartment cataloguing 21 areas on all 3 islands with 1,200 + climbs.
Xlendi is also an enviable base for diving and we work closely with one of the established diving schools who have been operating since 1989, and offer a wealth of experience and local knowledge, whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced diver. They offer over 50 shore and boat sites with depths from 5m to 45m in Gozo, Comino and northwest Malta; and sights from natural rock formations to sunken wrecks and reefs bursting with marine life. First timers can have a go at a trial dive at the shallow end of a safe bay and experienced divers can join others of similar experience on accompanied dives. Unaccompanied diving is possible for those divers holding the local government dive permit.
Trial dives in the calm clear waters of Xlendi Bay are a great place to start and from the tender age of eight, children can take the Padi Bubblemaker course to introduce them to the world of scuba diving in a pool in less than six feet of water.
If your idea of a good holiday is tranquility, magnificent unspoiled scenery, the best diving in the Med, superb food and the most amazingly friendly people plus a typical Mediterranean climate, then Gozo is a good choice!

"Fled the next morning"

It is very unpleasant to receive our first ever negative review in over 10 years of renting out this property, particularly as this is the first we have heard of any of these complaints. The booking process was indeed more complicated as my guest was based in Hungary, so to assist him, I reserved his dates and allowed him a significant amount of extra time to make his payment because he experienced some issues with transferring money, so any issues with booking did not originate with me. With regards to key pick up, as soon as he requested a change of arrangements I contacted my agent and asked her if she could, as a favour, meet this family at the apartment door to save them a 10 minute detour, which she kindly did responding to my request within hours. Regarding the other 'complaints', which although are a matter of opinion, we never like to receive, they could have been addressed had we been notified. However, it is a shame that we were not made aware of these issues until 2 months later in a public forum rather than being addressed directly.

Very nice appartement, very clean, not too well equipped in kitchen but
fine if you're eating out a lot. Unfortunately coqs, geese and peacocks nearby wake you up at dawn. Could do with a couple of deck chairs on the balcony.
