The Peloponnese region
A wonderful place to explore ancient antiquity. Beautiful, unspoilt and containing many of the country's major ancient sites, the Peloponnese Peninsula is the southern part of Greece, divided from the mainland by the Corinth Canal. Mycenae, Ancient Olympia, Sparta, Epidavros and Ancient Corinth, Greece's most significant archaeological digs, have all taken place here.
Imposing mountain ranges, fertile coastal strips, majestic cliffs, sandy beaches and picturesque villages make up what must be some of the loveliest and most stunning scenery in Greece. The deeply indented coastline and secluded beaches provide a safe haven for swimming and a variety of water sports.
New major highways and other National roads make easy access to the principal towns and coastal villages, while twisting mountain roads, caves and canyons abound for the more adventurous.
A truly wonderful region of unspoiled natural history.
Xiropigado area
A small picturesque village near the northern end of the Argolic Gulf, Xiropigado is within easy reach of some of the loveliest and majestic regions of the Peloponnese, as well as many of the most significant sites of ancient antiquity.
The village itself has a variety of small shops, including a mini market which sells essential groceries and household items. There are a number of tavernas, which include on their menus locally caught fresh fish as well as traditional Greek cuisine. These tavernas are situated overlooking the Argolic Gulf and offer fantastic views while you are enjoying local fresh produce.
Across the bay is the beautiful historic town of Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece, with its old period houses and pensions, cobbled streets, seafood restaurants, cafes and tavernas. The archaeology museum is well worth a visit and displays many artefacts from the Mysenae era.
Both Nafplion and the nearby town of Argos, which itself has ancient origins, have modern shops. Further afield, but within easy reach is the area of Epidavros. The ancient but remarkably well preserved theatre, with amazing natural acoustics, stages its summer festival of classic Greek tragedies from late June to August.
For those wanting a more traditional day at the seaside, the small town of Tolo, 1.5km from Nafplion, with its wide stretch of sandy beach, seaside cafes and tavernas, is an ideal place to spend the day. From here a trip by ferry or water taxi takes you to the magical islands of Spetses and Hydra. Astros, a short drive from Xiropigado, also boasts a sandy beach and tavernas.
The more adventurous could take a trip through the mountains to the southwest of Xiropigado, and would love the journey to Sparta. The scenery is awe inspiring - rocky canyons, monasteries and traditional villages hanging onto the sides of the mountains, streams running through deep gorges and, in the springtime and early summer, blossoming fruit trees and carpets of wild flowers - superb!
Xiropigado is an amazing place to spend your holiday. Clear stretches of water secluded beaches and magnificent views of mountains and sea. Relax or explore, the choice is yours.
