The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Valencia Province region
Location & Activities This exclusive and private chalet is situated in the lovely Bixquert Valley surrounded by mountains, is known as the ‘Beverley Hills of Xativa’ yet has easy access to the medieval town of Xativa with its fountains, shops, boulevards and friendly café society only 2 km away by car. Access on foot or by bike is via a shortcut down the hill nearby. There are old streets, churches, museums, squares and the Castle, home to the Borgia Popes, towers above the Xativa and is floodlit by night. The famous Cova Negra site (with findings of pre-historic man) is just 1 km away. It is situated in a picturesque river valley offering scenic walking/hiking as well as rock climbing. The tennis club of San Patricio, which also serves inexpensive and tasty selection of food, is 100m away - just great after a game of tennis or for a special party.
The Valencia Region of Spain is divided into 3 provinces. CASTELLON to the north, Valencia in the centre and ALICANTE in the south. These three provinces form the Comunitat Valenciana - Land of Valencia. This lovely region of Spain has over 500 kilometres of stunning coastline which are full of some of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe.
The Valencia region of Spain is an extremely beautiful and very fertile area known as La Huerta (Garden of Spain). It's also known as the land of flowers, light and love. Flowers because Valencia is full of flowers, because of the incredible light Valenciano painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida highlighted in his paintings and love... because Valencia is full of romance and passion.
The weather is incredibly mild in the winter and the rest of the year it's absolutely glorious. Xativa enjoys an exceptionally warm and sunny climate because of its idyllic location sheltered by the Sierra Nervissa yet very close to the Mediterranean coastline. The abundance of sunshine taken with the quality of life, lack of stress, classic mediterranean diet of fish, fruit and vegetables makes it one of the most healthy climates in the world.
Valencia was chosen to host the 2007/8 America's Cup because Valencia has the most fantastic sailing conditions.
Valencia has also reached an agreement to host Grand Prix Racing from 2008 on a circuit around the Spanish city's new America's Cup port, It is said to be one of the best urban cicuits in the world. The race, to be called the European Grand Prix, is scheduled for late in the season on a newly designed circuit of between 4.1 and 4.3 km in length reminiscent of Monaco's with its harbour-side location. The circuit will be designed by German Hermann Tilke, architect of the sport's most modern tracks. This makes the City one of Europe's most attractive locations for sporting events.
It's a city by the sea with the freshest of seafood all year round. It's also the birthplace of paella and known as the 'Garden of Spain' with rice fields, nuts, wine, olive and vast orange groves spread the length of the lovely wide sandy beaches. Valencia, the City of Arts & Sciences was designed by Santiago Calatrava, is now considered one of the major leisure complexes of Europe. Stroll through the old city centre of Valencia, visiting the Lonja, now listed as World Heritage, the Central Market, the Cathedral, the Palau de la Generalitat, the Palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas, the Serranos and the Quart towers, Visit the IVAM, the La Beneficencia Cultural Centre and the Museum of Fine Arts to admire their outstanding art collections and exhibitions.
Only 12 km south of the city centre is the famous nature reserve of the Albufera - (l'Albufera) which is very famous for it's gastronomy, fishing and beautiful freshwater lagoon. It's also famous for the boat rides and amazing sun sets which are captured in the books by the world famous novelist, Vicente Blasco Ibañez. All that separates the Albufera from the blue flag beaches and crystal clear Mediterranean sea is a thin strip of land
Go for a boatride in the evening on the Albufera and see the beauty of sunset over the lake. Enjoy a genuine Valencian paella or a dish of all i pebre in El Palmar and wash it down with a wonderful local wine or a freshly made horchata (tiger nut milk).
The coastal towns of Oliva and Gandia are located at the southerly tip of the province of Valencia near the Safor mountains and vast orange groves of the area. Gandia is the larger of the two with a port, harbour and golden sandy beaches full of hotels and apartments and many sports facilities. Oliva has wide sandy beaches and a new and very old town with traditional whitewashed town houses and is located near the sand dunes and famous golf course of this lovely area of Valencia.
The beautiful sandy, mediterranean beaches of Tavernes de Valldigna, Miramar, Piles and Xeraco are located only 30 km from Xativa and enjoy a smaller, family environment as well as all the little cafes, restaurants and shops.
There is a huge waterpark in Cullera for the children to enjoy and the Estany lake as well as the beaches. Try an arros negre (rice in squid ink) at midday in a beachside restaurant.
There are five golf courses located in the province of Valencia. Enjoy your favourite sport in an exceptional climate.
R & R by 'taking the medicinal waters' and bathing at the Cofrentes, Chulilla, Calles or REquena health spas.
Experience a classical play at the Roman Theatre of Sagunto or lister to a magnificent concert in Lliria, a town famous for its musical activities. It has two orchestras and hosts many international symphony orchestras throughout the year.
Enjoy nature at its best in the Alto Turia district. Visit the animal reserve of La Serratilla in the mountains near Benageber, climb the Remedio peak in Chelva or hike through the ravines formed by the river Turia.
Visit La Canal de Navarres and La Safor to see the cave paintings, now World Heritage sites.
Comb the narrow streets of Bocairent, then visit the ancient Moorish caves cut into a nearby cliff.
Xativa area
Xativa is a welcoming and historic City strategically placed on the gentle slopes of the Sierra del Castillo, surrounded by natural elements which furnish the landscape with an indescribable beauty. Hanibal watered his elephants here and Neolithic people, the Romans and the Moors have all made use of the strong defensive position now occupied by the superb castle. This dominates the town, and repays the walk up, through lavender, olive and pine. The old city walls enclose both the lively old town, the remains of the roman city higher up, the EU Bioreserve on the slopes to the Castle, and the Castle itself.
Within the old town, you have the classic mediterranean complex of narrow streets, old churches, little squares and, reputatedly, 1000 fountains! There is a large Cathedral, built by the Borgias, Spain's only Popes, who came from Xativa. There are three swimming pools (one indoor), a great museum, and a modern theatre and a newly rebuilt grand bullring/cultural venue which hosted an Elton John recently. The City has a strong cultural programme (details from the very helpful Tourist Information Office (email: - touristinfo.xativa@turisme.m400.gva.es or tel: 0034 962 273346).
It’s the tradition of festivals and fiestas which really makes Xativa special. Most months one parish or another in the town will celebrate their Saints Day. The whole town takes to the streets for the big events. These are: Fallas 15-19 March ( processions, parties, great bonfires of giant satirical statues, bands and massive fireworks), Easter, with processions on the days up to Good Friday, when everyone turns out, Corpus Christie around 13 June, and Christmas and the procession of the Three Kings on 6 Jan. The biggest event is the annual Fira - 15 to 20 August. AND...2007/8 is for Xativa the Valencian version of "City of Culture", called "LA LLUM De LES IMATGES", with major restoration and refurbishment of key historic buildings and streets and special exhibitions throughout the year.
As befits its role as a regional centre, Xativa's pedestrianised streets are lined with traditional, family run shops selling everything from hats, wedding dresses and fans, to wonderful cakes, fresh bread, local vegetables, superb meat and fish. There are also a range of little cafés and small restaurants, many offering superb value "menu del dia" costing only €7.50 for a 3-course meal, wine & coffee included!.
Bargain hunters should not miss the market in Xativa old town on Tuesday mornings (10-1.30 p.m.) where an extensive range of clothes, shoes, textiles, pottery and plants is sold at inexpensive prices. There is a smaller market on Friday mornings. A superb food market is held on Wednesday mornings in the nearby village of Genoves.
Xativa is a great place to sample to real Spain, and a great centre for exploring both the relatively unknown and quiet hinterland, the coast, or the City which claims to be Spain's liveliest - Valencia.

Guestbook
My wife and I enjoyed a thoroughly peaceful and relaxing holiday at Villa Vida. We were made to feel truly welcome by our hosts who suggested plenty of local sights and restaurants. We’re already planning our next escape to the Villa Vida. R & E Love, 9-13th July, 2007
Our family (two adults and two children of 13 and 16) have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday and highly recommend the apartment of Villa Vida. It is very large, light and tastefully furnished. We had direct access to the terrace, with early morning and evening shade. This area formed a glorious place to relax, and B-B-Q with a scenic view to the landscaped garden with pool and the mountains behind. We all especially enjoyed the large and beautiful constructed pool where we all ‘chilled out’.
Just 5 minutes away is the historic mountain town Xativa full of cosy cheap Spanish restaurants and fashionable boutiques. The old part with historic buildings and view to the castle at the top of the mountain is particularly charming.
The hosts (Eve & Lars) were wonderfully friendly and helpful with pointing out good restaurants and excursion possibilities. We look forward to returning for another holiday and warmly recommend this place. L & T Melau, 26th July to 2nd August, 2007
Villa Vida was a wonderful place to go for a relaxing holiday. We had a really lovely time lazing in the stunning garden and swimming in the gorgeous pool. The flat was very spacious and comfortable and made the ideal base for the week when we went exploring in Xativa - a beautiful town with plenty to see and do.
Lars and Evie gave us an incredibly warm welcome and made us feel very at home. They gave us some great recommendations of where to visit / eat - all of which were very successful! We might well be back here again in the future..... Anna and Rob. August 2007
We had a fantastic week, beautiful surroundings and friendly owners. The surrounding countryside offers superb walks. I'm sure we will be back. The kids loved it! M & K Gunn, Aug. 2007
We have had a fantastic 2 weeks stay here. The pool was brilliant for our 5 year old son, who has cured his fear of water. Thank you so much for all your help, we have really enjoyed our holiday! The Quinn familiy, 9 Sep. 2007
Dear Evie and Lars, Thank you ever so much for the accommodation. I can honestly say its the best place I've ever stayed in. We had a fantastic time and are sad to be home - except for seeing our kids again!! Will recommend you to everyone we know. Once again Thank you Robert and Claire Peak, November 2007
Eileen & I enjoyed a wonderful holiday in your comfortable apartment and beautiful environment with sunny, warm days and the cosy log burning stove for cosy evenings around the fire. Amazing weather for January! A & E Meachen (24-31.1.08)
