The Island of Gozo region

Within a short distance of Xaghra (nowhere is more than 20 minutes away!) there are a wealth of things to see and do. You can while away your days at the beaches including Ramla Bay (the longest, sandiest beach on Malta), Hondoq (a mix of beach and rock swimming) and Marsalforn (mostly swimming off the rocks). Of historical significance is Victoria, the capital city of Gozo with its walled citadel or you can visit the fishing villages of Marsalforn and Xlendi to sample their many restaurants and simply watch the world go by.
For the more adventurous there are a wealth of dive schools which offer some excellent diving - not so many fish but you can go cave or wreck diving or there's the blue hole at Dwejra which is a really special dive. For those who like walking there are plenty of coastal walks to try and if you want to be really adventurous you could try cycling although the quality of the roads can make this a bit of a challenge.
From May through to September you will tend to get good summer weather with the temperatures in the mid 20s rising to the high 30s at the height of summer in August. Outside of these times the weather can be a little changeable and if it rains it can be very impressive - we're talking flooding and rivers of water running down the streets. Generally though even if it's not warm enough to sunbathe you will get clear days.
The summer signals the start of the 'festa' season - village feasts characterised by their fireworks (day and night.!) and brightly lit churches and streets. Whilst you can often view the fireworks from the roof terrace it is well worth going to the actual village to see the whole event but be warned the fireworks are very loud!!
The Xaghra area
Xaghra is one of Gozo's larger villages and is well supplied with restaurants, bars, supermarkets and bakeries. In addition Xaghra has a number of historical sites, including the Ggantija Temples (a neolithic temple older than Stonehenge), all within walking distance of our farmhouse.

Dar Rajal is really beautiful, especially when the patio is lit up at night. The only sound in the morning is the crowing of a cockerel, so it feels truly rustic, even though it is only a 15 minute... more |
