The Island of Gozo region

Gozo, meaning “joy” in Castilian, is the second largest Island of the Maltese archipelago, with a population of only 30,000. Gozo and its inhabitants have their own distinct character and identity, with noticeably different lifestyles, accents and dialect. Gozitans are known for their friendliness and welcome to visitors, going out of their way to indicate a direction or help a visitor find their destination. The real beauty of Gozo, apart from its stunning seascape and interior, lies in the villages. Here, it seems as if time really does stand still. The locals treasure their peace and the villages are tranquil, proving to be a wonderful respite from the trials and tribulations of everyday life for visitors. For a taste of village life, rent a villa or farmhouse and for a taste of luxury, rent one with a pool as is Margerita.

Xaghra

Apart from being in itself a picturesque village, the village of Xaghra is rich in historical heritage and therefore has plenty to offer to its visitors. Xaghra is encircled by the beautiful bays of Ramla, Ghajn Barrani and Marsalforn. Xaghra is certainly one of the spots in Gozo where there has been human habitation since extremely early times. Here one can find the Neolithic temples of Ggantija, which are acknowledged to be the oldest free-standing structures in the world. On that edge of the town overlooking a splendid view of Ramla Bay, one can find the mythological Calypso Cave, the home of the nymph Calypso mentioned in Homer's Odyssey.Yet other caves renowned for the fantastic shapes of their stalagmites and stalactites, are found - Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave. The village boasts an attractive windmill known as Ta' Kola Windmill now a museum.A curious museum that one should not miss when visiting Xaghra, is the "Pomskizillious" Museum of Toys, where a display of antique collectors' toys is exhibited. The first parish church was the medieval chapel dedicated to St. Anthony the Abbot and a very traditional feast where lots of people attend to have their pets and animals blessed is celebrated in January. Today a beautiful basilicata now stands majestically in the centre of the main square dedicated to Our Lady of Nativity and the feast is celebrated on 8th September 2012 which also commemorates the victory of the Maltese under the Knights of St. John over the Turks in the Siege of 1565.
