The ferry boat crossings are frequent and the trip which is between 20-25 minutes disembarks at Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. Visit www.gozochannel.com for the ferry boat time-table.The drive from Mgarr to the Church in Xaghra would take about 10 minutes.

The Xaghra area
X-Xaghra (pronounced: shara) is built on a hill to the central north-east of the island of Gozo.
The Neolithic Ggantija Temples in Xaghra are a World Heritage Site and completely unique. The oldest freestanding temples in the world, they date back to 3500BC and they are attributed to a mythical giantess. These temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt. There are also the stalactites and stalagmites caves , the Kola Windmill and also Calypso Cave which is overlooking a large sandy beach called Ramla Bay.This is where Gozo got it's name as the Island of Calypso. The legend says that Calypso who was a nymph, saved Ulysses who got shipwrecked and kept him with her for seven years.
There is also Ramla Bay ( red sandy beach) which is the most popular and most unspoilt beach on Gozo. The beach is shallow and perfect for children, except on windy days. During the winter Ramla Bay affords pleasant peaceful walks. A statue dedicated to Our Lady of Hope stands in the middle of the beach.
Xaghra has got a very nice square lined with cafeterias, bars and restaurants which are open all day. People selling fresh vegetables and fruit. Pharmacy, butcher shops, newspaper shops, banks etc.. There is also a very large nice church dedicated to our Lady of Victory.
The feast of Xaghra is celebrated on the 8th of September, with a whole week of fireworks, bands playing, processions and so on.

Salvu met us at Rubbles Bar in Xaghra square, our choice as this was our 4th Holiday in Xaghra this seemed the most civilized thing to do (its that first glass of Gozoan wine). We followed him to the... more |

Arriving at 10:30pm Salvu met us as we drove off the ferry and lead the way to the villa, an experience in itself! A nice touch and very much appreciated as the Gozitan roads are a whole story in themselves! Don't let this put you off it's just like driving at home apart from nobody pays much attention to the signs and the potholes are a little bigger! Salvu and Jacqueline had left a welcome pack which allowed us not to worry about rushing out the next morning for food but to eat a leisurely breakfast and admire the fantastic views from the back of the villa, none of the pictures do the view justice it really is great. The villa is on the road between Xaghra and Marsalforn with both about a 5 min drive saying that nothing's far away in Gozo. There are plenty of places to eat all of which were really good and discovering Gozitan/Maltese wines was a bonus always well priced and really good. Everyone we met on the island was really friendly and seemed genuinely pleased that you were visiting their island. One evening whilst taking the short walk from the villa to the Pulitos restaurant only 150 meters down the road a man passed in a car turned around a drove back and offered the four of us a lift as he thought we were walking into Marsalforn. Talking about Pulitos it is a very good restaurant right on the doorstep so no need to worry about having glass of vino or two. However the best restaurant in Gozo (probably Malta as well) you can see from the villa in the valley below it's called Te Franc and is an old converted farmhouse where they serve amazing food. It's not cheap but believe me it's worth it. Overall this is a great villa on a great island with lots of great restaurants where nobody seems to be in much of a rush and everyone seems pleased to see you. What more can I say but I'm sure we'll be back! Nick and family |
