The Island of Gozo region
Gozo – covers an area of 67 km or 26 square miles, it is 9 miles long by 4 1/2 miles wide and known as the sleepy island full of grace and charm. Gozo's population is about 28.000 (approx). Despite its compact size, Gozo has a lot to offer. Historical places can be found in an abundance, a visit to the Ggantija temples is a must! It is believed that these temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt in actual fact they date back to 3.500 years B.C.
Gozo – Other places of interest include the museum of Archaeology in Victoria, which is full of archaeological remains and pre-historic artefacts. The Citadel (Victoria 'Capital City'), the folklore museum in Gharb, Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Calypso's Cave, which can be found in Xaghra.
'Ta Pinu' Sanctuary, where, at the turn of the century a local peasant woman had apparitions from Our Lady, is a very special and Holy Place. Xewkija Dome dedicated to St. John the Baptist is, 'Ta Cenc' cliffs and Dolmens, the Azure Window, the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock all in Dwejra, Ramla Bay one of the Maltese islands largest beaches with its unique orange coloured sand and the old part of Victoria are places to note and visit, whilst on the island of Gozo. If you’re looking for a destination that offers more than just a suntan, Gozo will definitely deliver beyond your expectations!
The village of Xaghra is rich in historical heritage and therefore has plenty to offer to its visitors. Situated towards the north east of the capital town of Victoria, Xaghra is encircled by the beautiful bays of Ramla, Ghajn Barrani and Marsalforn, while the valleys of Ramla, Ta' l-Ghejjun and Marsalforn caress this lovely village.
Ramla Bay with its unique honey-red sand is the most popular beach on the island during summer. The plateau hilltop on which the town stands descends towards several evergreen valleys. Amongst them one finds the Eghzien Valley and Ghajn Xejba Valley, which lead into Marsalforn Valley.
The terraced fields are the utmost fertile areas and are henceforth the source of the best agricultural products and grapes of the highest quality. Xaghra is certainly one of the areas of Gozo that has seen human habitation since extremely early times - Here one can find the Neolithic temples of Ggantija, which are acknowledged to be the oldest free-standing structures in the world.
On that edge of the town overlooking a splendid view of Ramla Bay, one can find the Calypso Cave, the home of the nymph Calypso mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. Other caves are renowned for the fantastic shapes of their stalagmites and stalactites, formed over the ages by the slow filtration of rainwater through the limestone which composes the tableland. Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave are ample examples of such natural marvel.
The village boasts an attractive windmill known as Ta' Kola Windmill, after its last tenant. The present windmill structure was built on 5th September 1786. It is the only windmill in Gozo that has its own original wooden cogwheel machinery in good functioning order. Intensive restoration was carried out on the Windmill in the early 90's that gave her back its original splendour.
Today it is functioning as a museum rendering Ta' Kola Windmill an ideal attraction to hundreds of tourists who visit Xaghra all year round.
The feast is celebrated every 8th September, locally known as "Il-Festa tal-Vittorja" commemorating the victory of the Maltese under the Knights of St. John over the Turks in the Siege of 1565. The feast of the Nativity of Our Lady has been since then a traditional national holiday.
Xaghra has 8 excellent restaurants, featuring cuisine for all budgets and tastes to delight!
Several lively bars with music and International T.V. & Sport.
Alfresco Coffee Shops
Bakery and Takeaway Food stores.
Several Supermarkets and Butchers.
Petrol station and fully stocked bicycle shop.

"Beautiful location, beautiful house, amazing stay!"
From booking to arrival our stay at Ta Nenu was amazing! The house was big enough for 6 adults to stay comfortably and enjoy what Gozo had to offer. The piazza in Xaghra was a 10min stroll (uphill) from the house and well worth going. Great food could be found at 'The Breeze' and 'Cafe Reale' serve up delicious cakes, pastries, ice-cream and coffee. We ate in on a couple of occasions taking full advantage of the BBQ and some al fresco dining. Everything we needed was easily found at a local supermarket only 5mins away. The house itself was lovely, the air-con in the bedrooms was a welcomed relief from the scorching summer heat and the view from the roof was breathtaking. From the first enquiry, through to booking and our stay Bronwyn was very helpful, she happily organised our transfers to and from the airport (a highly recommend this service!) Teresa was there on arrival to hand over the keys and provide us with the necessary information about the house itself, overall Ta Nenu is a lovely house and well worth the stay!

"It was like going back in time!"
Initially I must admit we were a little disappointed on arrival with the outside space as it was a bit overlooked (as it turned out there is nobody about to look!) The farmhouse itself was lovely and very well equipped. Perfect location for walking into the village square where there are a couple of bars and restaurants, supermarket and bakery. We did hire a car which was great for getting around the island, although it is not a necessity as there is a bus stop outside the house. Ramla Bay is a couple of minutes drive. There is a rooftop terrace with great view and the night sky is fantastic, needs a couple of deck chairs up there to relax on. Make friends with Menu across the road! very interesting chap with his own little museum of machinery. Gozo is like stepping back in time and once you get over the initial shock it really is quite lovely and the people are very friendly. We enjoyed our stay and would hope to return.
Thank you very much for our first review! Bronwyn & I are really thrilled that you enjoyed the farmhouse and as you said, it is a perfect location in Xaghra within easy walking distance of the best square in Gozo with fantastic restaurants, bars & shops. The views of the island are great from the roof and we have already added a table and chairs due to your feedback. Hope to see you again soon!
