INTRODUCING SERKUZAN “BOUTIQUE FARMHOUSE” - BY JULES
“This is one of four houses located in a private and secluded spot, within the exclusive IL Vigneto suite. Another one of Abraham's superb creations. A fresh and sophisticated twist to the traditional farmhouse. We are familiar with the emergence of the Boutique style hotel. Well, welcome to Gozo's “Boutique Farmhouse”. Based on the farmhouse ideal, built from traditional local stone with wooden beams, it offers a top class contemporary finish. Furnished to an excellent standard, it provides every modern home comfort. With its own pool and terrace, Surkuzan is an ideal retreat on Gozo. Alongside its three sister houses, it makes a superb combined accommodation for large family celebrations and is a regular host to wedding groups. Intrigued? A short introduction hardly does this experience justice. Come and experience it for yourself“ - JULES
Through the front door you are presented with a bright spacious living area. The lounge has a 40” LCD TV with DVD and Cable TV. Internet wifi is also available. A spacious modern kitchen provides every catering facility for dining at home. As part of this open plan space is the dining table. If you prefer to have a chef do the work, this is a service conveniently on hand.
Terrace doors will lead you to the outside pool terrace where comfortable rattan garden furniture makes for a great laid back day with a Barbeque.
The house has two spacious double bedrooms and one with twin beds. All 3 bedrooms have a bathroom en suite.
One bedroom is situated on the ground floor whilst the others are found on the second floor. Bedroom two has its own private terrace whilst the master bedroom has a hydro bath and a 37” LCD TV with Cable TV.
The house benefits from air conditioning, coin operated by the guest.
Serkuzan is only a 15 minute walk away from shops, pubs and restaurants, 20 minute walk away from Ramla, 5 minute walk from the nearest bus stop and Abraham's Supermarket amongst others.
JULES GOZO HOLIDAYS
We are a family business who specialise in authentic farmhouse holidays on idyllic Gozo.
In 2007 we purchased a traditional farmhouse of charm and character. Today, guests continue to enjoy the peace, comfort and hospitality of Ta' Rena as a base to experience Gozo. Handpicked farmhouses, all familiar to us, will have local character, home comforts, excellent amenity and a peaceful location to enjoy the riches of Gozo.
JULES also offers an extended holiday experience. Choose car transfer from the airport to the door, car or bike hire, special occasions or excursions organised e.g. Vineyard tours, accommodation for large parties, receptions, group activities, nature walks, a lesson in Gozitan cuisine and more.
Our dedicated and experienced team is U.K. and Gozo based. Myself (JULES) and partner, Chris, liaise with the team on Gozo, led by Peter Pisani. The Island of Gozo region
WELCOME TO GOZO
Let me tell you about the Mediterranean's best kept secret.
5km North West of Malta and south of Sicily, the small island is 9 miles long and 5 miles wide – the equivalent of Manhattan! It was first inhabited in 50000 BC when farmers from nearby Sicily crossed the Mediterranean and settled. Today it has about 27 000 residents. Not just a summer gem, it's a worthy all-year destination.
Fondly regarded as having “stood still”, Gozo has managed to preserve its traditional ways whilst adapting to the future. The island is relaxing, peaceful and “laid back”, compared to Malta. It is rural and green with beautiful countryside landscapes and coastal views. For a small island, Gozo has a big personality, rich in folk law, history and culture. Rustic, charming, and charismatic with a warm hospitality, describes Gozo. Unique and authentic, the Gozo experience lures visitors back time after time. “Foodies” are also drawn to the island by the variety of excellent fresh and flavoursome Mediterranean Gozitan cuisine. Its wineries also produce some of the most respected wines.
Gozo's main town is Victoria where you'll find a hive of activity. There are many café's, bars, restaurants and shops, a Culture Centre and the Citadel, Victoria's Cathedral. There are 2 shopping arcades, each with a supermarket open all day. Pjazza Independenza is Victoria's main square, shared by a morning market and number of open air café's. It is normally found buzzing with the chatter of locals and tourists enjoying a coffee or Cisk. Great for people watching.
Victoria is surrounded by 13 smaller towns and villages. Some of these also have small rural hamlets. Arriva now operates an extended service with bus stops in all villages. You can either catch a bus to a neighbouring village or to Victoria where the main bus terminus is located. From here, there is a network of routes to all villages making it possible to see the island by bus. It is a very cheap way to get around (a one day ticket is currently €2.60). Gozo has also introduced a “Hop on, Hop off Bus”. A great leisurely way to see all of Gozo.
There are five main beaches on Gozo and many smaller bays and coves. Beaches include;
Xlendi it is possible to swim in a small sandy beach or paddle, dive and snorkel off surrounding rocks. Xlendi is an excellent dive site, a thriving fishing village and small harbour.
Malsaforn has one of the best known bays and buzzes with a hype of activity in summer months. Restaurants and bars surround the turquoise Mediterranean, serving local cuisine such as Gbejniet (cheese), fresh local fish and rabbit. Lampuki is a seasonal speciality. As migrating fish, they pass the island in autumn.
Ramla is Gozo's largest, yet unspoilt and beautiful beach dating back to Roman times. It is a vast blanket of red sand, ideal for sun worshipers. The sea is shallow and perfect for children.
San Blas is a delightful little beach of red sand. Of exceptional charm, it is quaint, idyllic. Quite secluded, it always escapes the crowds
Dahlet Qorrot beach is quaint and you can swim from rocks on both sides in crystal clear water. Fishermen use this tranquil bay as a base and boats can be seen bobbing quietly on the sea.
The Azure Window at San Lawrenz is a popular feature on the tourist map. It is a natural arch formed out of the sea millions of years ago when a limestone cave collapsed,
RELIGION AND HISTORY
Religion and culture play a significant role in life on Gozo. The Saints are the focus of worship both past and present. For such as small island, Gozo has a high concentration of churches - forty six in total. Each village has a unique church. So impressive, they say is the church dome in Xewkija is larger than St Paul's in London!
Every year, Gozo celebrates its Saints by organising spectacular feasts throughout the summer months. Each town and village will host a splendid “festa” with celebrations every weekend from late May to mid-September. Each festa is organised in honour of the patron saint to whom the parish is dedicated. These are lively celebrations with colourful illuminations, brass bands, processions and plenty of fireworks. The façade of the village church and main streets are dressed with thousands of twinkling lights. Scenes we may compare to a major street party – but times a thousand.
Other churches and temples of historic acclaim include Ta' Pinu Church. This is Gozo's national shrine and most iconic church. Legend has it that Ta' Pinu touched many with its mysterious powers and today, is a world renowned relic. Also parts of Gozo's heritage are a number of historic temples. The Ggantija Temples in Xaghra, a World Heritage Site, are the oldest freestanding temples in the world. Dating back to 3500BC, they are attributed to a mythical giantess.
The temperatures are typical of a lovely Mediterranean climate and long warm summer. Warmer temperatures appear as early as March and climb steadily as months of April and May are very pleasant. June can offer hot climate with July through to September being the hottest – average temperature 30C/86F. As we would expect, August is the hottest. October is a great time to visit if you're looking for less heat but a pleasant sunny climate. Although lesser temperatures November to February, these months can still offer as many days of 5 – 6 hours of pleasant sunshine.
Offering a wealth of rich historical heritage, Xaghra is a particularly picturesque village encircled by the lush valleys of Ramla, Ta' l-Ghejjun and Marsalforn and by three beautiful bays - Rambla (considered Gozo's best beach), Ghajn Barrani and Marsalforn.
History shows Xaghra has been settled since the earliest times and possesses one of the most extraordinary structures on the Island - the Ggantija temple complex. Consisting of two Neolithic stone temples dating back to 3600BC, these gargantuan items are amongst the oldest freestanding stone buildings in the world and as such hold UNESCO World Heritage status.
Close-by is the restored eighteenth-century windmill, Ta' Kola, with its original mechanisms and miller's living quarters on view while for something quite different, the Pomskizillious Museum of Toys displays a range of antique toys and a waxwork of artist and rhyme-writer, Edward Lear.
Perhaps a more surprising village attraction is its caves! Hidden beneath two private houses in Xaghra's residential streets you find Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave; while just outside the town, overlooking Ramla Bay, is the legendary 'Calpyso's Cave'- supposedly home of mythical nymph, Calypso, from Homer's Odyssey.
Xaghra's first parish church, dedicated to St Anthony Abbott, was originally a medieval chapel that later gained parish status in 1688 and still stands today. The parish, however, is now served by the much larger Basilica within the central square (dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary). The 8th September marks the annual feast day and, unusually, serves a dual purpose: not only does it honour the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but the date also marks "Il-Festa tal-Vittorja" (The Victory Feast) in memory of the Maltese victory under the Knights of St. John over the Ottoman Turks in the Great Siege of 1565.
