About this location

The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight is situated approximately 3 miles off the English Southern Coastline. It is known for its breathtaking scenery with much of the Island being designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Island first became popular as a holiday destination during Victorian times and its unique charm still entices over 2.5 million visitors each year. It is quite easy to appreciate why the Island attracts so many, with its scenic coastline, award winning golden beaches, charming little villages and temperate climate – in fact the Island can boast more hours of sunshine than most other destinations in Britain. For the more energetic, the Island offers over 500 miles of maintained footpaths which makes it ideal for walkers and cyclists alike. The Islands towns offer a comprehensive range of shops and amenities including many 'High Street' names together with popular cafes, bars and restaurants - some even being awarded the 'Michelin Star'. All in all the Island is a wonderful holiday destination, catering for all ages and with activities for all interests.

Wootton Bridge

Wootton Bridge is situated towards the northern side of the Isle of Wight. It is located approximately midway between the Islands two main towns of Newport and Ryde, being in the region of three and a half miles distant from both. Wootton Creek has been a port and waterway for thousands of years. The Romans landed cargo here and the monks at the nearby Quarr Abbey, who owned the mill, had a fishery at the creek mouth. It is said that even King Canute once came ashore here. The causeway across the creek, together with the presence of the mill, were the contributing factors for the growth of the original settlement of Wootton. The cluster of houses situated around the Sloop Inn are the oldest in the village and thought to be in the region of 250 years old. A new road together with improvements to the causeway were carried out during 1865 and resulted in the bypassing of the Sloop Inn and the mill. Since these times the village has grown, creeping up both sides of the valley. There are now a number of amenities, local shops and several public houses – including the Sloop Inn which is very popular for its roast dinners! The village also boasts its own steam railway station. From here a trip back in time can be enjoyed to the main station at Havenstreet, continuing to Smallbrook Station were connections can be made onto the Island Rail network, who run the old former London Underground trains. For the walkers and ramblers there are plenty of walks in and around the village. Firestone Copse is also close by, offering further walks, picnic sites and views across the Mill Pond.

"High quality accommodation and surroundings"

Well-presented and well-equipped property, with plenty of thoughtful touches. Supplied games went down well. It would be helpful to tell guests in advance that dogs could not be left alone in the prop… More

Thank you for your lovely review & I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Buttercup Barn. With regard to notifying guests about dogs not being allowed to be left alone in the property, it does state this quite clearly in our Booking Terms & Conditions, within the section entitled 'Pets'. Further, you did return the Booking Terms & Conditions, signed by yourself, as having read & understood them. However, I am sure this was probably just an oversight & I am pleased that it did not affect the overall enjoyment of your holiday. Once again, thank you for your booking & we look forward to hopefully seeing you all again. All best wishes...
