The West Country region
The South West has arguably some of the most dramatic scenery in England. Within this, North Devon can boast rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, wide estuaries and a particularly intense clear estuary light, green countryside wooded valleys and open moorlands. Walk the coastal path, cycle ride the Tarka Trail or across the moor, fish in the many rivers or open seas, horse-ride along the beach or across Exmoor, surf, sail, wind-surf, kite-surf or just build your castle in the sand!
So whether you are looking to get away from it all and relax or to get active and explore, there is always something to suit all of the family in North Devon.
Wander around traditional fishing villages or along sandy beaches. Explore unspoilt landscapes and a wealth of attractions. Unwind at a spa or get active and try one of the water-sports in Devon. Many attractions have special offers and free events and there are so many natural playgrounds including Exmoor Dartmoor, and, on your doorstep, the coast.
There are great things to do in North Devon all year round!
Leave your car and walk down to the beautiful beaches between the property and Woolacombe, exploring Combesgate Beach where surfers enjoy the waves and children the rock pools; nearby lies Barricane Beach (renowned Shell Beach) where there is a catering establishment tucked under the cliffs. During the summer months serving fabulous food, drinks and ice creams and then further to the main 3 miles of sandy surfing beach at Woolacombe leading along to Putsborough.
The village of Woolacombe offers lots of amenities with local individual shops including a post office/general store. There are ample surf shops , bistros, cafes and ice cream parlours to while away your time!
The timeless village of Mortehoe is a short walk away and offers tea rooms, fish & chips, general stores and two public houses - and the wonderful walks around Morte Point are not to be missed including Grunta Beach which is only accessed by foot.
For the more energetic, surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, para gliding, kayaking and horse riding are just a few of the activities in which you could indulge or perhaps you would like to stand admiring the ocean with a fishing rod in your hand and attempt to catch a bass for supper! There is something for everyone at Woolacombe!
Woolacombe is an extremely popular surfing beach with the beautiful sands of the main beach stretching towards Putsborough and is just a ten minute walk from the property. There are many other smaller beaches just a short walk away, including Barricane Beach (a lovely shell beach, awarded 'beach of the week' in Sunday Times August 2008) and Combesgate Beach (known for its rockpools which lies just below Gull Rock).
Towards Mortehoe and only accessible by foot, is Grunta Beach and a little further on Rockham Bay. Morte Point has lovely headland walks and is owned by the National Trust as is the land beside Burnside with its 'donkey path' leading to Mortehoe, etc.
On the main Woolacombe beach there are beach huts available for hire and a small children's play area with swingboats etc and there is even an adventure playground in the centre of the village with mini golf!
The village nestles between the hills and paragliders are regularly seen with their beautiful colourful 'chutes' silently gliding over those enjoying the surf below! There are many catering establishments, bistros, ice cream parlours and surfing shops in Woolacombe as well as a general store/post office. Beginners and advanced riders can enjoy the breathtaking scenery on horseback!
