The East Anglia / Suffolk region

Suffolk is one of the driest counties in England, often enjoying much better summers than the rest of the UK. With its beautiful landscapes and villages, made famous by the artist John Constable, it is renowned for its many excellent restaurants supplied by local farms and locally caught seafood. Woodbridge is on the edge of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing nearly 400 sq km of protected ancient heathland, forests and wetlands, home to rare native breeds of butterflies, birds and fauna. The numerous tidal estuaries and rivers provide a wonderful area for boating, walking and cycling, with many designated cycling tracks and footpaths. Its lowland coastline offers a wide choice of beaches and seaside towns.
Various important archaeological finds have been made in Suffolk, notably at Mildenhall, Hoxne and most famously Sutton Hoo just outside Woodbridge. It is an area which continues to inspire artists and, particularly during the summer months, there are many art exhibitions, open studios and art trails in the towns and villages.
The Woodbridge area
Located just off the A12, Woodbridge is a very attractive and interesting riverside market town, ideally located to visit Constable Country, Lavenham and Bury St Edmunds in West Suffolk and to the east, the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths (designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Sutton Hoo is under ten minutes' drive from Lavender Cottage. During July and August there is an open top bus from our entrance to Market Hill which can be used to visit Sutton Hoo.
Several golf courses nearby, the nearest is 3 minutes drive. The popular coastal town of Southwold and neighbouring Walberswick and Dunwich are 45 minutes away by car. Framlingham and Orford, particularly noted for their castles, are around 30 minutes away. Nearby Snape Maltings holds various concerts, including the annual Aldeburgh Music Festival. Sailing is an important feature of coastal Suffolk life and several towns, including Woodbridge, hold colourful sailing events and regattas which attract boats from all over the UK and abroad.
