Snug in winter and serene in the summer, Pightle Cottage has overlooked its namesake - the village pightle, or green - since around 1850. The cottage holds onto its charm and original features but has been tastefully refurbished to a quality finish throughout - from winding staircase to bright, well-kitted kitchen/dining room and cosy adjoining sitting room, complete with open log fire. Upstairs, there is a light and airy double bedroom overlooking the Pightle, and a bathroom with bath and shower mixer tap. Back downstairs the kitchen looks onto a neat secluded cottage garden, with an outhouse for garden furniture and bike storage.

Pightle Cottage is set back from the town in a small traffic-free terrace - ensuring a quiet, peaceful stay - but is only 2 minutes walk from Wickham Markets's bustling centre. Here you'll find a crop of local shops (plus a Co-op store open 7 days a week ), tearooms and restaurants. Do make time for the award-winning Revett & Son butchers and their superb sausages.

The charming coastal towns of Orford, Dunwich, and Southwold are all close by. Woodbridge, which is only 10 minutes away, is a lovely old town on the beautiful Deben estuary, with Sutton Hoo, the famous Saxon burial ground, on the opposite bank. There are castles with rich histories at both Orford and Framlingham. And finally, why not pay a visit to Snape Maltings - home of the famous Aldeburgh Festival, with a year round programme of concerts, events and unbeatable farmers markets?

The East Anglia region

Suffolk, although only 2 hours north east of London, remains essentially rural, quiet, and unspoilt by modern development. The county is bounded to the east by the Heritage Coastline which contains a wonderful mix of natural environments, including dunes, cliffs, wide estuaries with extensive reed beds, sandy heathland and ancient forest. Its proximity to the North Sea has left a rich history of migrations from the European mainland, including Saxons and Vikings, whose marks can be seen to this day; there are also the more recent historical monuments of Framlingham and Orford castles. The land provides a range of quality local produce such as traditional beer, locally reared pork and beef, and tasty fresh vegetables.

Woodbridge

Pightle Cottage is ideal for exploring this beautiful part of East Suffolk. The coastal towns of Aldeburgh, Orford, Dunwich, Walberswick and Southwold are all within easy reach, each offering their own distinctive character. Woodbridge, 3 miles away on the Deben estuary, is a charming market town, with Sutton Hoo - the famous Saxon burial ground - on the opposite bank of the estuary. Snape Maltings - home of the world famous Aldeburgh Festival - has a year round programme of concerts, events together with a variety of local produce and crafts outlets.
