Wirskworth area

Wirksworth is one of the oldest towns of this area and still one of those with greatest character. Centred around its marketplace, where markets have been held since Edward I granted the right in 1306, it has many fine old buildings with picturesque alleys and craftsmen's yards.

The reason for the splendour of many of the buildings is Wirksworth's historical trade - it was the southern centre of the Derbyshire lead industry and the Soke and Wapentake of Wirksworth, as it was called, was one of the most productive mining areas.

How to get there

From Buxton, follow signpost to Ashbourne (A515), continue along this road until you reach a Garage on the left at Newhaven. Take the turning on the left signposted to Matlock, B5012. Continue along this road passing through the Grangemill crossroads and take the next turning on the right after approximately two miles signposted to Wirksworth. Turn immediately left again up the B5023 and carry on through Middleton until you reach a T-junction, turn right and continue through to Wirksworth village, passing the Market Square.
Proceed through Wirksworth Village and past the Wheatsheaf Pub on the left, then take the second left into Water Lane following the signpost to the Leisure Centre. Continue up Water Lane, the The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway line and up the hill.

On reaching the Church on the right continue up the steep hill and take the second left up Gorsey Bank, which is the turning just after Providence Mill (there is no sign post for Gorsey Bank
You will reach a very sharp right turn at the top, which may take two turns carry on a little further up and you will find Hog Cottage on the left.
