The Heart of England/Peak District
The Peak District National Park has been popular with day-trippers since it was established in 1951 but there is so much more to see and do here than could possibly be fitted into a day-trip. Saddler's Cottage is set in the picturesque market town of Wirksworth, in the Derbyshire Dales, which offers an ideal base for exploring Derbyshire and the Peak District.
Carsington Water is just up the hill to the west, the High Peak Trail runs across the northern edge of the town continuing for 17.5 miles deep into the Peak District, the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site is literally just the other side of the hill and that's before you even start to consider Chatsworth, Dovedale, Edale, Bakewell, The Matlocks........
Wirksworth is an ancient town, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1089 and granted its Market Charter in 1306. It served as the administrative centre for this area of Derbyshire until the late 19th Century. Full of quaint nooks and crannies waiting for you to explore, the town holds its traditional Well Dressing Festival every Spring Bank Holiday, and a very modern Arts and Architecture Festival in September.
So why not join the elite band of explorers who have discovered Wirksworth and fallen in love with it. It's a fascinating place and makes a great base from which to explore the rest of our beautiful county.
Wirksworth has several pubs (2 within 250m! of the cottage), cafés and restaurants; delicatessens; a local supermarket; bakeries; post office and pharmacy all within easy walking distance of Saddler's Cottage.
A Children's playground and skate park is located approximately 300m from Saddler's Cottage.
