Rock Cottage is a charming, 4 star Quality in Tourism, two bedroomed beamed cottage nestling above the historic Peak District National Park village of Winster, Derbyshire. No pictures can do justice to the fabulous views enjoyed from every window and the garden. Since opening in 2005 the Visitors' Book shows all our guests rating the cottage highly.

The perfect place to relax, reflect or explore. With its peaceful, off road location, Rock Cottage is ideal for walkers, romantic couples or those just wanting to 'get away from it all'. Beautifully furnished, sleeping 3 people in 2 bedrooms (one double and a single with a 4 foot bed), with full gas central heating, endless hot water on demand and all towels and linen provided. Laundry and weekly cleaning service can be easily arranged.

Well behaved dogs are more than welcome. All we ask is that they remain downstairs in consideration for our other guests and sleep in their favourite in the warm kitchen.

New for 2013, adjacent to the cottage, we have created a small but beautifully appointed garden for your enjoyment complete with a sheltered sitting out area, summer house and water feature. At the front of the cottage, tucked away from any roads, is a garden seat. With your favourite drink in hand, you can relax and savour the complete tranquillity of the location and ponder…

Historic Winster offers a well stock village store open for 7 days as well as a Post Office and 2 pubs serving excellent food. Within easy distance are the stately homes of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hal, the market towns of Ashbourne and Bakewell as well as Matlock.

On your doorstep are an abundance of walks through fields, alongside rivers and into the hills. Numerous nearby cycle tracks can take you from Dovedale in the south to Buxton in the north. Castleton and the Dark Peak are all within easy driving distance.

The welcoming stable front door opens into the modern well appointed fully fitted kitchen with gas cooker, refrigerator, microwave and dish-washer. An ample store of utensils and crockery for 6 people as well as the usual day to day equipment such as iron and ironing board, vacuum cleaner, coffeer maker, cooking dishes and even a wok!

A glass panelled door leads through into the beamed, light and airy living area with stairs leading off to the upstairs bedrooms, all with breathtaking views.

The lounge has comfortable seating for four in front of a feature fire with TV, DVD and VCR, complete with a good selection of favourite videos for your enjoyment. In the separate dining area for 4 you will find a stereo CD nad radio together with an eclectic selection of CDs alongside games and exceedingly well stocked bookshelves and wine rack. Free WiFi throughout the cottage.

Upstairs the landing leads to two double bedrooms each with fitted wardrobes and low- level windows looking out across the valley.

The bathroom completes the accommodation with white bath/shower, basin and toilet. All towels and bed linen are supplied for the duration of your stay, together with a welcome tray. If you've forgotten any essential toiletries we have a supply on hand which we only ask you to replace for other guests before you leave.

For longer stay guests weekly cleaning and laundry facilities are available.

Off road car parking is a short walk away and a common for easy walking of pets.

The Peak District National Park region

Britain's first national park, established in 1951, is visited by people from all over the world. They come to find peace, tranquillity and adventure, experiencing some of England’s finest climbing, caving, walking and cycling. The National Park is also home to 38,000 people.

The local economy is based on tourism, farming, quarrying and manufacturing.

The Chatsworth estate, home of the Duke of Devonshire, Haddon Hall together with the market towns of Bakewell and Buxton must head up a formidable list of places of interest to visit and explore.

Winster

Winster is a picturesque village in the south-east of the Peak District National Park. It occupies an upland location 215 to 275 metres (700 to 900 feet) above sea level.

The name 'Winster' is first recorded in Domesday Book (1086) as Winsterne, which possibly means 'Wyn's thorn tree', presumably after a local landmark.

The village is located in a broad valley where the steep limestone bank to the south meets the shales and grit stones to the north. The geology gives Winster much of its distinctive character, both in the walled fields with their limestone outcrops and in the mixture of limestone and grit stone from which the houses are built. The only substantial brick building is the Market House.

Lead mining, for which Winster is famous, may have had its origins here in Roman times, for the Romans certainly mined in this part of Derbyshire. The boom in mining from the late seventeenth century saw the population rise to 2,000 by 1750 and turned the village into a prosperous town, one of the largest in the county. But flooding in the mines became a problem as the workings went deeper, and eventually it forced many of them to shut down.

The first-time visitor is invariably surprised by its grand Main Street, closed in by the Market House at one end and the Dower House at the other, and by the jumble of tightly packed cottages spreading down the lanes and high up Winster Bank. A number of the buildings on Main Street, some of which were once shops, date from the hey-day of mining.

The two grandest buildings are Winster Market House (now owned by the National Trust) and Winster Hall. The cottages which huddle together on the hillside, known as Winster Bank, are more likely to have been the modest homes of the poorer miners, quarrymen and agricultural workers and their families. They spread out between two steep roads, East Bank and West Bank, and are linked by a web of narrow pathways. All around are mine shafts and grassy mounds left over from the period of lead mining.

"Fabulous Cottage"

A lovely cosy cottage with a fantastic view in a beautiful spot in Winster. The cottage has every thing you need as a home from home. Clean, comfortable, cosy and well decorated. Winster is a lovely village with lovely friendly locals and pet friendly pubs. We stayed the weekend of Whit week with our little dog Lillie and everybody either stopped to have a chat or smiled and said hello as they walked past.
The cottage is ideally situated to explore the very best of the Peak District no matter what the weather.
We will be looking to stay there again in the near future
