Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 4
The cottage comfortably accommodates up to four people. It has good facilities for families, but is also a cosy retreat for couples. The cottage is situated on a country Estate which was used as the location for the well known BBC television series 'To the Manor Born' and features in one of the episodes. The surroundings are very peaceful, with the only noise being birdsong and the babbling brook which borders the garden. The surrounding area is popular with walkers, riders and cyclists . The village of Winsham, with its pub and excellent village shop, is half a mile away and the World Heritage Coast around Lyme Regis, with its fossils and sea fishing is within easy driving distance.
East Devon, Dorset and South Somerset are all within easy reach with opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors, and the many stately homes and castles in the area. The Winsham Village Shop supplies a good range of food and household necessities. In addition, there are shopping facilities in Chard (3 miles) and Crewkerne (5 miles) and it is possible to arrange for grocery deliveries from Waitrose.

|Further details indoors|
The cottage is amply furnished for four people. The kitchen is very well equipped for a holiday cottage, with a good range of stainless steel pans, cutlery, utensils and serving dishes, as well as a Portmeirion china service. Many of our guests have expressed appreciation for the quality of equipment provided. Although we do not provide a cot, there is space for families who wish to bring their own. For the avoidance of confusion, we should make clear that although bedlinen and teatowels are provided, guests need to bring their own towels.
The cottage is regularly inspected by a Visit England accredited inspector, gaining a Gold Award in 2012 and 2013, placing it at the top end of four star rated properties.
|Further details outdoors|
The cottage has a pretty, 'cottage' garden, with extensive lawns and flower beds. A shallow stream borders the property, which provides wonderful paddling opportunities for our younger guests. Care should, however, be taken with toddlers.
The garden is a haven for wildlife - a wide variety of birds come to visit the bird feeders, as well as squirrels and the occasional deer. Although the latter are very shy, they often come to visit in the early morning or during the evening. Pheasants are also frequent visitors in the season
A welcome tea tray is laid ready for guests' arrival.
Families with toddlers should beware of the presence of a stream at the edge of the property.
There is a single bedroom downstairs, next door to the w.c. This could be suitable for those with limited mobility, although the main bathroom is upstairs.
New for 2013!
Guests who are aged over 18 are able to enjoy the facilities offered by The Cricket St Thomas Hotel's Leisure Club, which has a fitness suite, including a swimming pool, together with a sauna and steam room. A number of classes are available for a small extra charge, as well as a range of beauty treatments, also for an additional charge, in the Hotel's Spa.
The West Country region
The cottage lies close to the borders of Somerset, Dorset and Devon. The beauty of the Blackdown Hills and the Marshwood Vale is close by and the countryside all around is classic English chequerboard, dotted with contented sheep and cattle. The seaside towns and villages of Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Branscombe and Beer are all within an easy drive.
Lyme Regis has Mark Hix's excellent fish restaurant, the Town Mill Bakery where you can buy artisan breads, as well as a fantastic fish monger selling the catch brought in that day. Axminster, 6 miles away, has Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Canteen, serving delicious local food at affordable prices.
A great combination - eat out well if you wish, or stay in and eat just as well, using locally-sourced delicious ingredients.
Numerous footpaths criss-cross the landscape. There are some wonderful country pubs in the area serving delicious food. For those who like to be active, there is a golf course close by which enjoys views south to Lyme Bay and across the English Channel, and north across the Somerset Levels to the Brecon Beacons in Wales. Horse riding is available at a local stables and there are opportunities for fishing.
A number of National Trust properties are to be found in the area, as well as the privately owned Forde Abbey, which is open to the public between April and October.

Stayed here a couple of years ago now and had a fantastic time. Cottage is up a roughly mads up lane on its own. Hardly any cars very quiet. We had my mother in law with us so the downstairs bathroom and bedroom was ideal. Have tried to book a return date but everytime theres a free booking we have to work :( but fully intend to return someday. Not sure about internet connection as we didn't take laptop/phone youll have to check when booking. Everthing you could want in the kitchen.
We are delighted that this reviewer still has such happy memories long after their holiday. We continue the process of maintaining and upgrading this property, so if a return trip is on the cards, there will be both new and familiar aspects to enjoy.
