An ideal getaway for those wanting a rural retreat in the heart of Devon. The large garden makes this a great family holiday location. Ashreigney is a sleepy village, but ideally situated for excursions to the North Devon coast, Exmoor and Dartmoor, or the City of Exeter. Nearest shops and pubs are in Chulmleigh (3miles) or Winkleigh (4 miles), but the bustling market town of Barnstaple is only 1/2 hours drive. Within an hours drive are numerous attractive beaches and rocky coves, cliff top walks and ocean vistas. A visit to the glorious isolation of Exmoor is a must. Wrelands will appeal to those who want to be away from the crowds.

The house has been owned by the same family for over 70 years, but was completely modernised in 2010. There is a good size lounge/diner, with a log burning stove (logs not supplied), two bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin) and a modern kitchen with halogen hob, oven, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. There is a main bathroom with bath, shower and toilet, and a second toilet with handbasin. Decor is modern. Heating and hot water are provided by electricity. The television offers 30 Freeview channels. Bed linen and towels are not supplied - please bring your own, or we can arrange local hire at a modest cost. Wi-fi internet access is available.

The West Country region

Devon is famous for its varied and exciting coastline, with miles of sandy beaches, rocky coves, dramatic cliffs and stunning sea vistas. Inland, the high moorlands of Exmoor and Dartmoor offer more dramatic scenery, wonderful walking and varied wildlife. The City of Exeter is well worth a visit for its fine cathedral, whilst Barnstaple is the north's regional centre offering shops and entertainment.


Ashreigney is a sleepy village where agriculture is still the backbone of the local economy. The countryside around the village is criss-crossed by a network of footpaths, bridleways and narrow lanes which provide a wide choice of pleasant walks. Waymarked walks are to be found in nearby Eggesford Forest, which also has a number of short cycle routes to complement the challenges of the numerous hills in the area. Extremely popular with walkers and cyclists is the Tarka Trail. Nearest access point is at Great Torrington, only 11 miles away, where cycle hire is available.

The area is a haven for wildlife and full of wild flowers in the Spring and Summer. The nearby River Taw has otters (the original inspiration for Tarka) and deer can be found in the local woods. Foxes, badgers and wild birds abound.

Popular local attractions include the magnificent RHS Gardens at Rosemoor and the Quince Honey Farm at South Molton. Golfers have a course at Chulmleigh, with fishing and horse riding also available locally.

The quaint old villages of Chulmleigh (3miles) and Winkleigh (5 miles) have a range of shops and pubs, including convenience stores. Small supermarkets will be found at South Molton or Torrington, while Barnstaple has several big stores, a thriving shopping centre and covered market.

This is a quiet rural area, not for those wanting hectic nightlife, although most of the local pubs offer a good night out, especially at weekends.

"for a last minute stay it was excellent!"

"Lovely quiet setting on the edge of Dartmoor"

Well presented/ good condition property on the edge of Dartmoor.

I travelled with my wife and young daughter. Everything in the house was very well presented and clean. One largge double room and another room with 2 single beds (and a travel cot) so perfect house for a family.

There is a nice sized back garden also.

The property is situated in a very small village. Beware there is no shop in the village so pays to be organised and have some stocks on arrival. However there are quite a few villages within 3 miles which have shops and also not far from Barnstaple so easy enough to stock up on your way there.

Being in such a small and sleepy locale provided a perfect relaxing end to a busy exploring day.

We would definitely recommend this property and would stay there again if travelling in the area.

"Fabulous family get away in the heart of beautiful Devon countryside"

This is a fabulous cozy home located perfectly for day trip explorations of Devon and Cornwall. The house is well equipped and recently renovated. We are looking forward to returning. Excellent value for money!

"Great holiday and ideal accommodation for young family"

We had a fantastic holiday despite the rain! Wrelands was ideal in a peaceful location but we could easily visit beaches and other tourist locations by car. The garden is a good size and it was great to have the wifi access so we could plan our day trips with up to date information from the internet. The kitchen was well equiped and the bedrooms comfortable. Highly recommended.

"Wonderful relaxing holiday"

This cottage is ideal for so many things, a base that you can relax in home comfort or exploring the devon county side, I did a little of both, and will be going again next year all being well.
