The Central Southern England region

The first known records of Windsor, or to be strictly accurate 'New Windsor', date from

as early as 1070, when William the Conqueror established fortification on a chalk

mound close to what later became Old Windsor. Today Windsor is twinned with

Eton with royal roots with the first residence in Windsor Castle in 1100, and

since then home to many royals.

Windsor Castle has a beautiful tree lined walk to the

gates and is Britain’s oldest inhabited castle and Her Majesty the Queen’s

official home. Both Windsor

and Eton are dominated by the sheer size of Windsor Castle; these twin towns are

the home of true British pomp and ceremony where one can watch the Changing of the

Guard at the Castle and see the unusual sight of school boys in formal black tailcoats

wandering the tiny streets of Eton.

Changing of the Guard, usually accompanied by a band,

takes place 11am daily April through to the end of July and alternate days for

the rest of the year (weather permitting and excluding Sundays).

Windsor offers many exciting activities to try your hand

at, including learning to play polo, often described as the sport of kings and

the royal borough hosts a number of venues and plenty of opportunities to take

part in half time “divot stamping” Pretty Woman style! Lessons are available where you can learn the

rules, tactics and perfect a polo swing.

Horse drawn carriages are available for exploration of

Windsor Great Park, Ascot carriages offer scenic drives in a beautiful

Victorian carriage. Orchard Poyle runs tours from outside Windsor Castle and down

The Long Walk to Home Park. and

Windsor town is full of an array of upmarket cafes, restaurants

and boutiques, whilst in comparison Eton is characterful and offers a single

street lined with antique shops and art galleries with a distinguishing allure

and style.

Take a walk riverside, escorted by The Royal Boatmen, the

Royals once used the Thames to travel between palaces but a rarity these days. The

walks along the path are not to be missed, start from Old Windsor, detour to

the villages of Datchet, you will then return across Victoria Bridge into Home

Park with the best picture postcard views of Windsor Castle and Eton.

Restaurants and cafes are in abundance around Windsor and

Eton, with a selection catering for all tastes. For those who want to dine out

for a special occasion why not venture to the neighbouring village of Bray for

two of only four of England’s 3* Michelin

restaurants; The Fat Duck at Bray with Heston Blumenthal and The Waterside Inn

run by Alain Roux.

Tearooms are something of the quintessential kind in

Windsor with the famous Crooked House of Tea rooms leading the way. A tiny tea

room with sloping floor, period beams and scrumptious royal cream teas.

There are lovely gardens across Windsor and Eton, but one

of the most commemorated is The Saville Garden which is part of the Royal

Landscape and also includes Valley Gardens and Virginia Water. One of England’s

finest woodlands and ornamental gardens with 35 acres parkland.

Families will be delighted to take a day out at Legoland,

a fun filled theme park with thrilling rides, some quite scary for those that

enjoy the adrenaline. Visit the website and

booking online saves £9 on the entry.

With so much to enjoy in Windsor and Eton you will be

forgiven for not looking further afield, but should you look, the transport

links offer trains into London from Windsor and Eton Station within 30 minutes

! The road systems offer easy access across the whole of the UK making Windsor

an excellent choice for adventure.
