The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District National Park is famous for its stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and cultural heritage. The tranquillity of the fells, valleys and lakes gives a sense of space and freedom to create a release from the pressures of modern-day life.

Staveley is just a short drive (10 minutes) to Windermere, Ambleside (20 minutes) and the beautiful Lakeland fells beyond.

Windermere / Staveley area

Whatever you fancy doing while you’re here, there is always somewhere to go, something to do and plenty to see.

There are lots of walks and biking routes to choose from around the Kentmere Valley, starting right from your doorstep. Alternatively venture further afield into the Lakes and take on the higher fells of Scafell and Helvellyn to name just two.

The Lake District also has some of the best rock climbing and scrambling routes in England. Enjoy sailing on Windermere, Coniston or Ullswater or tackle some great river canoeing. If you prefer a more sedate sport, one of the most scenic golf courses in the UK is just a few miles away near Bowness-on-Windermere.

The Lake District is not only a place of natural beauty but also offers a fantastic array of things to see and do. If you’re looking for adventure why not try Grizedale Forest's Go Ape, a challenging course of rope bridges and zip slides up to 60 feet above the forest floor. For a more cultural experience visit the homes of Beatrix Potter, Williams Wordsworth and John Ruskin.

The Lake District offers many historic houses and some magnificent gardens. Levens Hall, boasting some of the world’s oldest topiary gardens is just 15 minutes drive from Staveley. A bit further on is Holker Hall, near Cark in Cartmel with a historic house, gardens and Lakeland Motor Museum, three great attractions in one setting.

Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside all have cinemas offering the latest movies. The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and the Bowness Laundry also offer arts and entertainment with a programme of music, dance and theatre productions. There are also swimming pools providing family swimming sessions in Kendal and Troutbeck Bridge. So those wet afternoons are well covered too!

How to get there

By Road

From the M6, take junction 36 towards Lake District Peninsulas. Follow the A591 towards Kendal but bi-pass the town and continue towards Windermere. About 3 miles after Kendal take the turning for Staveley. Driving through the village, you pass the Eagle & Child pub (note it’s location for later!), good old Spar in the centre and then towards the far end of the village. Rawes Garth is the last turning on the left before Cumbria Tourism.

Staveley is lucky enough to have it’s own railway station, a 5 minute walk will see you at Riverside Cottage (we’ll send you directions when you book!).
