The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Windermere

Finsthwaite is a small village close to Hawkshead in southern Lakeland. Its home to just a few houses and a small church, St Peters which dates back to 1873. It's located five miles from arguably one of the most picturesque villages in Lakeland, Hawskhead which is full of quaint 16th Century cottages, old pubs and picturesque shops along its pedestrianised streets. Hawkshead is close to Coniston Water and Lake Windermere, though the nearest lake is Esthwaite Water - the birthplace of Beatrix Potter. There is a Beatrix Potter gallery in Hawkshead as well as William Wordsworth's Grammar School. It is very easy to access the surrounding countryside for water based activities in addition to walking, hiking or climbing opportunities.
