The Lake District has some of the UK’s most breathtaking and beautiful scenery, from stunning waterfalls to England's highest mountain and deepest lake, the scenery in the Lake District is spectacular.
It’s famous for its fells and mountains, the highest and most challenging are Scafell Pike, Scafell, Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Bowfell, ideal for ardent walkers however there are many more mountains that are easier and just as enjoyable to climb.
The Lake District is an ideal all year round holiday destination. It’s great for families, romantic getaway, friends that like to holiday together, ardent walkers, sports enthusiasts; it just has so much to offer with so many wonderful places to visit.
Bowness on Windermere is one of hot spots to visit; it’s always packed with tourists just loving the atmosphere of the town and lake. Ambleside is just as popular with many visitors flocking to the area too.
Rydal Mount, in the heart of the Lake District, lies between Ambleside and Grasmere and has glorious views of Lake Windermere, Rydal Water and the surrounding fells. This was Wordsworth's best loved family home for the greater part of his life. Grasmere Lake and Rydal Water lies just to the South, around which there are some gentle low level walks.
For those that want more strenuous walking Grasmere is ideally located for the Langdale Pikes, Helvellyn and Scarfell Pikes. These are just some of the wonderful places that are a “Must” to visit.
Great family days out include, Haverthwaite & Lakeside Steam railway, Lakeside cruises to Bowness and Ambleside, The Aquarium, South Lakes Animal Park and Zoo- Dalton, Lakeland Motor Museum, Grizedale Forest including Go-Ape or hire mountain bikes to explore the forest trails, Munster Castle, Holker Hall.
For a more leisurely day out try Fell Foot Park on the edge of Lake Windermere, ideal for picnics, boating or cooling off in the Lake.
The Windermere / Newby Bridge area
Newby Bridge is an ideal base for a Lakeland holiday, set at the gateway to the glorious Lakeland National Park and an ideal year-round holiday location. The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with beautiful scenery on its doorstep and many local attractions.
Local attractions within walking distance of the cottage are: Lakeland Motor Museum; Lakeland and Haverthwaite Railway, Lakeland Steam Cruises across Lake Windermere (you can buy a combined ticket for train and cruises for that extra special day out);
Horse riding at Bigland Equestrian Centre is a few minutes’ drive away or a good uphill walk. This is one of the best in the Lake District and is ideal for novices to experienced riders. The Centre also offers several exciting sports such as, shooting, fishing, archery and quad-biking.
A short drive from the cottage is Lakeside where you will find Lakeside Aquarium.
The cottage is 8 miles from Bowness-on-Windermere and 4 miles from Cartmel with its famous Priory and Race Course.
Within walking distance there is The Whitewater Hotel with bar and restaurant. A mile and a half from the cottage is the Swan Hotel and Spa. This has been completely refurbished to a very high standard. The Swan has excellent Spa facilities and a great bar and superb dining, with gardens overlooking the River Leven. Close by is The Newby Bridge Hotel that offers a lovely Sunday lunch carvery. Both hotels can be reached by an enjoyable hillside walk.
