The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

The village of Newby Bridge sits on the banks of the river Leven close to the southern end of lake Windermere. It is close to the Lakeside Pier from which you can take a boat to Waterhead or Bowness on Windermere – a great way to get to one of the most popular towns in the Lake District. You can also catch the steam train from the pier to Haverthwaite, a rural village close to Backbarrow. The area offers lots of things to do including the Aquarium of the Lakes which has over 20 displays of underwater creatures, and Stott Park Bobbin Mill which is owned and run by English Heritage and has guided walks around the mill.
