Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4

Boasting two comfortable, contemporary furnished double bedrooms sleeping four people, Fox Howe is perfect for a romantic getaway or just a chance to chill in company of friends.

Whether you would like to simply enjoy the complete peace of Backbarrow, taking cycle rides or walks out from your door (whether for a leisurely stroll among the fells, hills and tarns or just a quick trip to one of the four friendly pubs/hotels within walking distance), or for use as a base for exploring the beautiful landscape of the Lake District National Park, we are certain that the plethora of local attractions and the location couldn’t be better.

Set above and back from the Brow Edge Road, you approach Fox Howe by walking 'up the garden path'. The front door opens into bright dining area with 180 degree views up and out over the village and across the River Leven to the tracks of the Haverthwaite Railway, where the beautiful old steam trains chug majestically back and forth from Lakeside. .
Part open plan, you move from the dining entrance through to the sitting room. The huge windows let the sun flood into the room but when the sun goes down simply touch the mood lighting to add the atmosphere and required glow to 'your' room. Big plump sofas sit on a pale timbered floor, where you can snuggle up and watch TV or simply nestle in and read the latest best seller.
The lounge area leads through to the huge fully equipped kitchen, with a large double oven range cooker with 6 burner gas hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, built in espresso machine and microwave. Everything you require is provided should you decide to cook for yourself and make the most of the stunning kitchen. Swamped with light from the patio doors that lead to the rear garden, this is a special kitchen. The large granite centre piece is the perfect place to congregate and chew the fat of the day over a glass of wine from the wine cooler, or simply prepare the dinner while watching the inbuilt TV.
Stairs lead up from the lounge to the fabulous sleeping accommodation. Off the landing and through the double doors is the beautiful master bedroom: a large, sun-filled bedroom with double windows, boasting wonderful views out toward the Leven Valley. With a contemporary and genteel cream, chocolate and green decor, a huge dressed king bed, with a plump duvet, this room is a delight to spend time in.
The second bedroom has another large window that drenches the room with morning sun. Lying on the deep pocket sprung 4’6 divan offers a divine outlook down toward the meadows and up to the fells. Envelop yourself in the luxury of Egyptian linen and treat every morning as a Sunday morning. The country style wardrobe offers bags of outfit space and the feature fireplace adds to this uplifting, serene environment.
The house bathroom with its huge deep double ended modern roll top bath, heated floor and towel rail, large mirror and luxury fittings make this the ideal space in which to relax and unwind.

The Cumbria/Lake District
Stunning mountains, open fells and the clear fresh water lakes – the Lake District landscape always inspires, with several literary greats, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter having had their creative juices stirred by the impressive scenery.
The Lake District is home to some of England’s best known and most beautiful scenery. While the central area, around Windermere and Ambleside, attract most of the visitors, those in the know head to less frequented spots, such as the Lake District’s south-western peninsula. Here the mountains meet the coast to give dramatic and unique vistas.
With a vast range of tourist attractions, historical sites and leisure activities (many within 10 minutes drive of Fox Howe), this part of the Lakes has so much to offer we are sure you will want to return again and again.
For the serious walker the mountains of Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn provide enjoyable challenges, whilst at lower levels there are hundreds of routes wandering among the lakes and stone-walled fields. You can even choose a lake to suit your mood: if bustling lakeside towns and exhilarating watersports take your fancy, then try Windermere or Coniston Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered boat soaking up the scenery in Victorian style or master a new skill such as kayaking, sailing or even raft building.
If it’s peace and tranquillity you seek then the secluded lakes of Buttermere and Wastwater are not to be missed. Yet Cumbria offers much more than the lakes alone. Explore the National Nature Reserve on Walney Island, the golden sand dunes of Roan Head or visit the hidden, picturesque Duddon Valley, with its heather clad moors peppered with birch trees.
The South Lakes has the best of both worlds – quiet, beautiful open countryside yet within easy reach of the Lake District’s ‘Hot Spots’.
Locally there is a lot to do. Several walks can be made straight from the front door, with the diversity of paths and tracks threading the fells and woodlands creating hundreds of opportunities for individual exploration, in a way that he well worn mountain routes can no longer satisfy. We also suggest some of our own favourite walks from the door such as the circular walk taking in the open fells behind Newby Bridge, through the delightful wooded Rusland Valley, back down to sea level and the marshy floors of Haverthwaite before returning through delightful woodland lanes - oh did I mention the four pubs that could be visited on this 9 mile route?
At Lakeside, steamers and launches leave for trips on Windermere lake and can be used as a sort of water bus to explore other areas. Around the foot of the lake, on the eastern tip, lies Fell Foot Park. Supervised by the National Trust, there are gardens, a cafe and, at the lake shore, jetties for mooring and hiring little row and sailing boats along with a ferry crossing to Lakeside.
Days out include the South Lakes Animal Park at nearby Dalton, where you can see Amur and Sumatran Tigers, Muncaster Castle with its owl sanctuary and adventure playground, either the Eskdale miniature railway or Haverthwaite Steam Trains, The Lakes Aquarium, boat trips on Windermere or Coniston Water, Furness Abbey, The Beatrix Potter Gallery, the award winning gardens of Holker Hall or Grizedale Forest with it's sculpture trails, way marked mountain bike tracks and high wire rope course provided by Go Ape - the list of attractions within the area is endless.
Leisure activities close by include lake swimming at Fell Foot, golfing, fishing, adrenalin sports, canoeing and horse riding. During the summer many local villages put on annual agricultural shows. These are well worth a visit to get a real feel for local life from Cumberland wrestling and ferret races to stick making competitions and well groomed Herdwick sheep.
Or just potter around and soak up the atmosphere of the ancient and picturesque local villages such as Cartmel (10 minutes drive), with its winding streets, pretty cottages, whitewashed houses and medieval buildings and village square. It is also home to Britain’s smallest National Hunt racecourse (meetings over late May and August bank holidays).
This this part of the Lakes really does has so much to offer we are sure you will be returning again and again. The local attractions close to Fox Howe are:
Walking distance = Lakeland Motor Museam; Lakeland and Haverthwaite Railway that links you to the Lakeland Steam Cruises up and down Windermere; The Lakes Aquarium; Bigland Hall Estate offering Adrenalin sports, shooting, fishing and riding.
Short Drive = Holker Hall; Sizergh Castle; South Lakes Wildlife Park; Blackwell arts and crafts house; World of Beatrix Potter;
For dining or a drink there is a good choice. Just across the main road is The Whitewater Hotel with bar and bistro and dramatic riverside setting. 1.5 miles away at Newby Bridge you leave the A590 over the handsome, multi arched stone bridge and are immediately confronted with the Swan Hotel. Smartly refurbished following flooding, the Swan has a good bar and dining, with gardens and grounds running down to the river. Or another mile further down the lane you'll find The Lakeside Hotel, overlooking the lake. This grand hotel has a traditional bar serving local ale, a lounge bar and contemporary bistro, along with a more formal restaurant offering fine cuisine, perfect for celebration or just a little indulgence.

We stayed at Fox How in May for 4 nights and the house was just what we needed. The level of spec in the house was far higher than any other rental cottage i have stayed at.
The kitchen is a WOW kitchen with everything you need including an inbuilt coffee machine.
The only downside is no direct parking on a drive, its just street parking.
