The Cumbria/Lake District region
The Lake District is an area of mountains and lakes in the north west of England. It is a heavily glaciated geological dome, with radiating drainage. It is the largest national park in the United Kingdom, covering 2,280 sq kms. It has long been valued for its natural beauty within a natural environment. It has exerted a profound influence over the artistic appreciation of the beauties of nature, inspiring Wordsworth and the Lake Pocts as well as many of Britain's finest landecape painters. It has also played an internationally important part in other areas endeavour, especially the understanding of geological processes and the development of rock climbing.
Places of interest include Beatrix Potter Exhibition, Lakes, Various Animal Centres, Various Outdoor Activities, Holker Hall, Keswick Brewery, Castles, Railways, Theatres, Museums, Cruises, Parks, Churches, Cathedrals, Galleries and Stone Circles to name but a few. The handy Tourist Information Centres are scattered all around the Lakes to help you make the most of the activities you wish to complete throughout your visit.
The Windermere / Bowness area
Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the most popular locations in the Lake District. Situated midway down Lake Windermere, a long promenade skirts the lake with views over a busy harbour where pleasure cruisers arrive and depart taking visitors up and down the lake.
The town has a vibrant, bustling atmosphere, especially in the summer months and a superb lakeside setting with lovely views across and down the lake. A car ferry runs to the far side of the lake taking visitors to Sawrey and Hawkshead or you can take a trip on one of the steamers north to Ambleside or south to Lakeside.
There is plenty to see and do including the Beatrix Potter Exhibition and Steamboat Museum, as well as an 18 hole ‘pitch and put’ and sailing marinas. Bowness provides a good selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as a wide range of shops, all within easy reach.
