Further details outdoors

Steps directly down to the Atlantic beach outside your door. The calm shallow waters of the Caribbean, perfect for children, are a short walk away on the other side of Windermere Island. Watch for humming birds feeding in the garden, ospreys diving for fish on the beach, turtles popping up to inspect you as you kayak or windsurf. A prime location for bone fishing.

The Out Islands region

The island of Eleuthera, 30 minutes flight from Nassau, is one of the outlying “family islands” of the Bahamas, famed for its unspoilt, uncrowded beaches with pink sand and clear turquoise waters. The island is 200 miles long and narrow, with the dark blue waters of the Atlantic on one side and the shallow turquoise seas of the Caribbean on the other. The pace of life is leisurely, guaranteed to be an antidote to the stresses of modern day living. Year round sea breezes cool the island.

Eleuthera is a prime location for the sport of bone fishing and the exceptionally clear waters are perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving on the nearby reefs. The adjacent Harbour Island, popular with film and rock stars, is famed for its pretty colonial-style buildings – well worth a day’s visit. Places to visit on Eleuthera include the spectacular Glass Window Bridge, the Hatchet Bay Caves, the Rock Sound Ocean Hole, and Preacher’s Cave. The brightly painted houses of the local settlements echo the colours of the island.

Windemere Island

Windermere is a small 3 mile long island joined to Eleuthera by a bridge and is for the exclusive use of the owners and renters of its small number of villas. It has the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean a short walk away on the other side. For many years it's been the favoured destination of those seeking peace and privacy, the British Royal Family amongst them. It's rare to see another person's footprints on the breathtaking beaches.

The Clubhouse - membership included in the rental - provides a swimming pool and tennis courts all year round and a bar and restaurant in high season. All other amenities - restaurants, supermarkets etc - can be found on Eleuthera, 20 - 30 minutes drive away.

"A step back into 1960"

If you want to step back into time, this is the place. Home in dated to 1960. But, the beach is perfect. It f you want to be alone, this is it, we only saw 2 people on it in a week. There were roach… More

Provender House was built in the 1970s. The photos in the ad are recent and accurate. U.S., Canadian, and European cell phones work fine at this location, but you must have your phone activated for international roaming, which this guest did not have. The internet, which is via DSL from the phone company, is normally quite reliable by island standards (in a typical week, it goes down a couple of times for half an hour). There were island-wide internet problems during the week of the guest's stay, apparently due to bad weather just before her visit. Yes, as is widely known, and as I always remind my guests, most restaurants on the island close during September. I am very surprised this guest seemed to have such trouble finding someone to take her fishing. Eleuthera is well known as a fishing destination and I have never heard of a fishing guide refusing to take someone fishing in September or any other month. There are many guides on the island, and they are always eager to work for visitors.

A shorter but more descriptive address than 'Provender, Windermere Island, Eleuthera, The Bahamas" is 'Paradise'. For anyone who wants peace and calm in beautiful isolation--and who doesn't?--this is it. A matchless two-mile beach, ocean 20 yards from the house, trees and colourful shrubs all round, neighbours a longish walk away and a second beach for swimming on the sound between Windermere Island and Eleuthera proper. All on a private and gated island at weekly prices that in most resorts would buy you a crowded and only moderately swish hotel.

The house is a model of intelligent design from the 1970s, recently modernised and comfortably furnished without bling or pointless luxury. The core of this bright, inside-outside house is a 40-foot drawing room with floor-to-ceiling windows on either side. The ocean-side and the land-side each open onto generous wood decks on which you can follow the sun or shade through the day. Four separate bedrooms with their own bathrooms, angle out, two at either end. Each bedroom has an ocean view. The plan allows for mingling and privacy.

Be clear. Windermere island is not a resort, though there is a clubhouse with an ample pool, tennis courts and a good restaurant five or so minutes walk away on the central spine of this narrow island. At Provender you have to make your own fun, your own socialising, your own life. There is no marina, no disco and no casino. The nearest shops are a 45-minute drive away. For anyone who gets the point, that is part of the charm. You and those with you are, in a sense, rather pampered castaways. If you want the essentials--sun, ocean and seclusion in a house rather than a beach hut or a shepherd's cave--Provender has all of them. The house, deservedly, is not given away, pricewise. But a fortnight in Paradise will be worth a year of self-punishment at the gym or self-analysis at the therapist.
