The Northern France / Nord-Pas-de-Calais region
The medieval city of Bruges, European Capital of Culture in 2002, is located just 75 minutes drive from Wimereux in Belgium. Lille, also a former Capital of Culture (this time in 2004) is also just over an hour way. Either Lille, or Calais, make an excellent starting point for a day trip to the French capital of Paris, with direct train services available on Eurostar or domestic SNCF rail service.
If you are in search of shopping, the Cite Europe shopping mall is located just 15 minutes away, and multiple beer and wine wholesalers are located within the vicinity of Calais. Finally, for golfers, the world renowned courses of Le Touquet are just a 20 minute drive south. Wimereux also has two great golf courses and golf range. For younger visitors there is also a crazy golf centre. Well served with shops, restaurants and hotels the architecture mainly dates from the beginning of the XIXth century and is predominantly Victorian Anglo-Norman in style. With its promenade and beach huts it retains much of the flavour of this era.
Wimereux area
The delightful and relatively undiscovered town of Wimereux lies between Boulogne on the Côte d'Opale and the port of Calais, and the Channel Tunnel terminal and Boulogne on the Côte d’Opale. Originally a small hamlet of 10 families in 1810, it was the arrival of the first train on the Paris-Calais line to at Wimille-Wimereux in 1867 which signalled the beginnings of the significant growth of this community.
The many activities on offer include swimming, sailing, sand yachting, windsurfing, horse riding, walking, tennis (five covered courts and four other courts) and an 18 hole golf course which is one of the oldest in the region and where you can see the white cliffs of Dover on a clear day, although on a windy day, a stiff breeze can apparently make the going a trifle rough. There is a mini golf course just on the way out of town. Wimereux is known as a ‘kid station’ which is to say, one which is especially safe for children.

Guestbook
Our daughter spent most days in the sea and we visited places around the area without really travelling too far. Loved the apartment, the patio area was great for sunbathing. Malcolm and Valerie Currie, Shrewsbury
It was beautiful and we couldn't have asked for a better position. For some reason I thought it would be in a busy street with not much privacy, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I must admit that in all the gites we have stayed in I have never seen a better equipped kitchen in all my life! Amazing. The weather was stunning and the local area was steeped in history, which we all enjoyed. We went over to Ypres and found it a lovely area and of course the obligatory history lesson on WWII. We're telling everyone about it and they can't believe how brown we are! Fiona and Grant Donaldson, Crewe, Cheshire
We had a great holiday and the apartment was a real 'home from home' It had everything we needed and very well equipped. We will definitely stay again as we know everything is there. Sue and Mark French. Enfield
