The Western Cape region

Garden Route:

This is a strip of land like no other in the world in terms of beauty, natural attractions and unique flora and fauna - hence its name. Three of South Africa’s top hikes take place here - the Otter Trail and the Tsitsikama and Dolphin trails and man’s footprint has made little impact on the rugged and sometimes inaccessible coastline. The Garden Route is a paradise for eco-lovers, bird watchers and solitude seekers and one of the most beautiful parts of the Western Cape.

The Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas, most of which occurs in the winter months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean. Any time of the year is good for visiting the Garden Route area, depending if you enjoy a peaceful retreat during the winter months, or a bustling holiday destination during the summer.

There are numerous wonderful day tours and sightseeing trips to be done around the Garden Route and environs. This section includes car hire companies, airlines, charter flights, and various other exciting travel opportunities.

Wilderness / Garden Route area

Wilderness is renowned for it's hospitality and the natural beauty of the surrounding area. It is set between the Kaaimans River and the Goukama Nature Reserve, whilst being bordered by the Outeniqua Mountains.
Wilderness is famous for it tranquil sea and beaches which stretch on forever, and has become an internationally sought after holiday resort. It is also surrounded by many rivers and natural lakes and lagoons. This makes it a great spot for water sport enthusiasts, who flock there regularly.

Wilderness also has a great number of craftsmen and women in the area. There work is often for sale and the tourist can pick up many bargains at the monthly craft markets, held in the middle and end of the month. This and many other interesting aspects of the town add to it's rustic charm.

This is a place that must be visited by any tourist in the Garden Route, it truly is a place of timeless beauty.

How to get there

Visiting South Africa will surely be a momentous experience! Pending the 2010 Soccer World Cup, all Airports have recently been enlarged and redecorated to offer 5 star luxury and safety. International flights arrive in either Oliver Thambo International Airport (Johannesburg) or Cape Town International Airport. From there connecting flights to George (the capital of the Garden Route) are always available in a few hours. It is approximately an hour flight depending on the departure airport. Wilderness is located 20 minutes drive from George Airport. Taxis are readily available and cars could easily be hired from the airport. Car hire in South Africa is fairly cheap compared to European countries. When driving from the airport one should take the N2 towards Port Elizabeth. On your way to Wilderness you will notice the surfer renowned Victoria Bay, the Kaaimans Pass, the Wilderness Beach the Outeniqua Choo Choo and vast lakes. Drive through Wilderness via the N2 for about 6 km. On the right hand side (seaside) you will find the Wilderness Garden Estate. Turn right and right again, and one of our friendly staff members will be there to greet you at the estate.

Further details indoors:
Built in an African style with a modern nuance the house radiates harmony with its surroundings. Travetine flooring throughout, marble, colourful drystone walling and thatched roofs with exposed beams create a warm yet rustic feel, while large aluminium windows and sliding doors emphasise the property's openness inviting sunlight into the large room layouts. This African feel is further emphasised through superb interior decorating and soft furnishings, including paintings and carvings of the big 5. Lighting emphasising the pine wooden beams and "kaapse riet" used in making the thatched roof provides a well rounded effect of warmth and class. Rare Wenza wood is used throughout the house and for winter times a log burning stove provides for ultimate comfort and atmosphere.

Further details outdoors:
An infinity pool is built on the edge of a large dune, overlooking the ocean. There is also a private walkway top the beach.

Further details

The house is built on a large dune on the beach front of the South Coast and offers panoramic views from every angle. It is fully equipped with decks and balconies to make sightseeing more accessible. Sights include whale watching in winter months, the Outeniqua Mountains, vast Wilderness lakes and the beach front. At night Mosselbay's city lights can be clearly seen. It is not only the sights, but also the smell and sound of the sea which makes the experience all the more special. Wilderness also has extremely clear skies and is accordingly perfect for stargazing. The villa is also built in the midst of Melkhout trees which is a protected tree species. Emphasis was placed on the preservation of these trees during the erection of the building because it forms the habitat of several bird and mammal species, including the well renowned Knysna Loerie and small "dyke".
