The Cumbria/Lake District region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes – the Lake District landscape has inspired several literary greats, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. Walking is one of the best ways of exploring the Lake District.
For the serious walker the mountains of Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn provide enjoyable challenges, whilst at lower levels there are hundreds of routes wandering among the lakes and stone-walled fields. You can even choose a lake to suit your mood: if bustling lakeside towns and exhilarating watersports take your fancy, then Windermere and Coniston Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. If it’s peace and tranquility you seek then the secluded lakes of Buttermere and Wastwater are not to be missed. Yet Cumbria offers much more than the lakes alone. Explore the National Nature Reserve on Walney Island or visit the picturesque Duddon Valley, where the heather clad moors peppered with birch trees inspired many of Wordsworth’s poems.
With its award-winning gardens and the Lakeland Motor Museum, Holker Hall is also a great day out, whilst in northern Cumbria the peaceful villages of Caldbeck and Ireby offer a haven of solitude and picturesque tranquility. To the east lies the green and sheltered Eden Valley. Its dramatic landscape provides a range of activities including walking, cycling and watersports and is home to the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre and Lowther Wildlife Park, perfect for a family day out
The Wigton / Silloth area
Silloth’s location on the shores of the Solway Firth, facing the hills of the Southern Galloway and neatly bordered by the Lake District Fells, has attracted visitors for years. Its reputation for fabulous sunsets and sea views inspired the artist, Turner, to capture its atmosphere on canvas. The town itself was built as a railhead and a port in the 1850s and shipped in Irish Granite to build Christ Church, which is open to visitors. The streets are wide, stylish and lined with trees. Coupled with a beautiful promenade, this part of Cumbria could almost be a small French town. There is an 18-hole golf course, which was the 'home' course for Miss Cecillia Leitch, the most celebrated woman golfer of the 19th Century. In addition, there are many attractions around Silloth, such as Grune Point, a sandy, raised shingle beach approximately one mile long and supporting a community of specialist vegetation, including sea sandwort, sea-holly and sand couch-grass.

This was the most comfortable cottage we have ever stayed in on our holidays, a real home from home. A perfect base for north west lakes, we loved it so much we are going back next year. Verified by FlipKey, a TripAdvisor company |
Guestbook for 1731 - Albion Cottage
What a lovely cottage, the decor was perfect and the facilities were more than adequate. It was so nice to be in accommodation that was top notch and who welcomed our dogs. The owners are a very pleasant couple who were approachable and friendly.

,The cottage was very warm and cosy, just as described. The owners were very friendly and helpful and the attached pub was also very good with all the customers making us welcome. The cottage is in a beautiful area, very relaxing. We were unfortunate in that the weather was terrible for the time of year, so we did not see as much of the area as we had hoped, but the cosy atmosphere of the cottage helped.
A nice touch was the wine, fruit and milk that was waiting for us on arrival.
