The property offers traditional accommodation and manages to retain some original features, including a brick inglenook fireplace – ideal for cosy winter nights indoors. With Carlisle and the coast within easy reach, this is a great base to explore not only the Lake District but also the surrounding area.

The Cumbria/Lake District

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes – the Lake District landscape has inspired several literary greats, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. Walking is one of the best ways of exploring the Lake District.

For the serious walker the mountains of Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn provide enjoyable challenges, whilst at lower levels there are hundreds of routes wandering among the lakes and stone-walled fields. You can even choose a lake to suit your mood: if bustling lakeside towns and exhilarating watersports take your fancy, then Windermere and Coniston Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. If it’s peace and tranquility you seek then the secluded lakes of Buttermere and Wastwater are not to be missed. Yet Cumbria offers much more than the lakes alone. Explore the National Nature Reserve on Walney Island or visit the picturesque Duddon Valley, where the heather clad moors peppered with birch trees inspired many of Wordsworth’s poems.

With its award-winning gardens and the Lakeland Motor Museum, Holker Hall is also a great day out, whilst in northern Cumbria the peaceful villages of Caldbeck and Ireby offer a haven of solitude and picturesque tranquility. To the east lies the green and sheltered Eden Valley. Its dramatic landscape provides a range of activities including walking, cycling and watersports and is home to the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre and Lowther Wildlife Park, perfect for a family day out


Wigton area

The traditional Cumbrian market town of Wigton was granted a charter in 1262 and still holds a market each Tuesday in the covered market hall. This is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants as well as boasting a theatre, bowling, swimming, tennis and facilities for many other sports. Lord Melvyn Bragg was once a native of Wigton, and used the town - renamed Thurston in some of his writings - and the surrounding area as the setting for his novels, including the well known title, 'A Time to Dance'.

Located just 18 miles from Penrith, this charming settlement is an ideal base for the attractions of the North Lakes, the cathedral city of Carlisle and the natural beauty of the West Cumbrian Coast. The Roman construction, Hadrian's Wall, is within 25 miles whilst the Scottish Borders and Gretna Green are also within easy reach.

Winter Short Breaks (WSB) are available at many properties in the 'Winter' period - subject to availability. Extra nights are charged pro rata of the weekly rental.

Off Season Breaks (OSB) are available at many properties in parts of the 'Low' and 'Mid' periods - subject to availability. The price for a 3 night break is either 75% of the normal weekly rental or, if it is higher, the quoted Winter Short Break price. Extra nights are charged pro rata of the weekly rental. OSBs can be booked within a calendar month of the start date of the holiday.

'Last Minute Breaks' (LMB) are available at most properties throughout the 'LOW', 'MID', 'HIGH', 'PEAK', 'XMAS' and 'NEW YEAR' periods. The price for a 3 night break is either 65% of the normal weekly rental or, if it is higher, the quoted Winter Short Break price. Extra nights are charged pro rata of the weekly rental. LMBs can be booked within one week of the start date of the holiday.
