The Cumbria/Lake District
Cumbria is a predominantly rural county which is considered one of the most beautiful regions of the United Kingdom and includes the whole of the Lake District, the Eden Valley, the North Pennines, the Furness Peninsula, and part of the Yorkshire Dales.
Silloth is situated in Western Lakeland which is a land of vivid and exciting contrasts, lying between the mountains and the sea. The Cumbrian coastal towns are all within minutes of complete peace and tranquility.
There are four main valleys, each with their own distinct character, leading from the coast into the heart of the Lake District: Ennerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale and Dunnerdale. Wasdale is the home of England's highest mountain Scafell Pike (3206 ft) and the deepest lake – Wastwater which is situated 44 miles south of Silloth
Silloth is a town with a population of around 3000, nestling on the shores of the Solway Firth, facing the hills of Southern Galloway and backed by the Lake District Fells. Silloth is noted for its invigorating but mild climate, its leisurely peaceful atmosphere and perhaps, most of all, its glorious sea views and wonderful sunsets over the water. These are considered fine enough to be recorded for posterity by Turner, the famous landscape artist. The town centre is made particularly attractive by thirty six acres of grassy, open space, known simply as 'The Green'.
The town was inspired by Carlisle businessmen as a railhead and port in the 1850’s. The Railway Company helped to develop the town and The Grey House is built on land originally owned by the railway and has been here since 1906.
The town remains unspoiled and has wide elegant tree lined streets, spacious sea front green and magnificent promenade stretching towards Skinburness which is an excellent walk.
Thousands of servicemen came to know it in World War II through the building nearby of a major aerodrome which now holds industrial firms and an impressive weekly market and car boot sale.
There are lots of events through the year both locally and wider afield.
A useful website to visit is www.visitcumbria.com or www.golakes.co.uk
Information on things to do is available in the annexe but many of our guests take the opportunity to relax and re-charge their batteries with walks on the promenade and time to watch the sun go down over Criffel Mountain in Scotland.
