The Cumbria region
The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery.
This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits.
The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family.
The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base.
Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes
With a charter granted in 1262, the traditional Cumbrian market town of Wigton still holds a market each Tuesday in the covered market hall. This lovely town is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants, as well as for other activities such as theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis and other sports. Wigtonian The Lord Melvyn Bragg novel, 'A Time to Dance', featured the town of Thurston, which was based on Wigton and the local area. The town is just 18 miles from Penrith and so makes an excellent base from which to explore the cathedral city of Carlisle, the North Lakes and the natural beauty of the West Cumbrian Coast. The epic Roman construction, Hadrian's Wall, is within 25 miles, whilst the Scottish borders and their famous town of Gretna Green are within easy driving distance.

A comfortable, warm and well equipped cottage. A problem with the washing machine was sorted very quickly by Natalie. Shame the internet wasn't working for most of the time- despite the owners best efforts to get it fixed- but Natalie and John were very helpful in allowing us to use their own network in their house.
We would certainly go back at quiet times. The only thing that put us off was the childrens' play area at the front of the cottages- not a problem at all while we were there, but we like peace and quiet so it wouldn't be ideal for us during school holidays.

Had a lovely few days staying here, the property was beautiful and so were the views of the surrounding farmland and Lake District. Very clean and came equipped with everything you could need while you were there.
The only downside was the nearest pub wasn't within walking distance or open on a Monday.

"Wonderful, Relaxing Stay"
This cottage is in an excellent location for days out, very close to all attractions in the Northern/Western Lake District, and also very close to the Scottish Border and Hadrian's Wall. The cottage itself was immaculate and very well equipped, there was everything we needed for a great stay. It is in a peaceful area, ideal to 'get away from it all'! There were some days we didn't want to leave the cottage to go out as we were so relaxed! Thankyou to the owners for a fantastic stay, we hope to return in the near future and we will be recommending these cottages to friends and family!
