The West Country / Devon region

Dartmoor National Park is the biggest and wildest area of open country in southern England. An area of outstanding natural beauty covering over 350 square miles, this breathtaking landscape is home to a huge variety of wildlife, and featured on television's 'Seven Natural Wonders' as the top natural wonder in the South West.

The entire area is rich in history and antiquities, hosting more ancient monuments and archaeological sites than anywhere else in Europe. Many traditional tales, folklore and ghost stories stem from this unique history.

The broader West Country is home to England's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Dorset and East Devon Coast, and Devon itself boasts two dramatic coastlines with many fantastic beaches for relaxation and water sports, complementing the mild climate of the area.

Widecombe-in-the-Moor / Ponsworthy area

Ponsworthy lies in the steep valley of the West Webburn river, about 2 miles from Widecombe-in-the-Moor, at the heart of Dartmoor National Park. The Smithy is in the centre of the village, one of a row of picturesque thatched cottages often pictured in calenders and postcards, climbing up a hill from a small stream flowing across the road (The Splash).

The Smithy is the perfect base for family holidays or for friends to get together, allowing you to experience the wonders of Dartmoor through the many activities available nearby. Footpaths begin at the front door and lead all over the moor, and there are local opportunities for cycling, pony trekking, golf, fishing, climbing and lots more.

For something more leisurely, there are heritage sites and National Trust properties in the area, as well as farms and miniature pony sanctuaries. Across the moor, there are restaurants, pubs and cafés in which to sample the famous Devon cream tea, and a rich variety of shops selling local produce, arts and crafts.

Widecombe-in-the-Moor is best known for the annual Widecombe Fair, (next held on Tuesday 8 September 2009) immortalised by the folk song involving a grey mare and 'Old Uncle Tom Cobley and All'. The village is steeped in history and local legend, and has several gift shops (including a National Trust shop), and a couple of pubs and cafés.
