The Devon region

Devon is arguably the most beautiful of the westcountry's counties with its two contrasting coastlines, the north a mecca for surfers and the more tranquil south ideal for families. With its distinctive thatched villages hiding in the folds of rolling green hills, its farming heritage still evident in the herds of dairy cattle and native sheep that graze the open commonland, there is nowhere more picturesque or tranquil. The fishing villages that hug the coasts have barely changed over the centuries and look out over beaches of fine sand and characterful harbours. The jewel in the county's crown is Dartmoor National Park.

Widecombe in the Moor

Dartmoor is the largest wilderness in Britain at 368 square miles, its granite hilltops known as tors standing up to 2037 feet above sea level. The views are spectacular over bog and grassland, heather and gorse right out to the distant sea. Sparkling brooks rush down over mossy boulders to fill the River Dart as it exits the moor at Buckfastleigh and tumbles on out to Dartmouth, watering on its way the native ponies and upland sheep and cattle that roam freely. Public access to the moor is very extensive, inviting walkers, riders and cyclists to explore its hidden delights, stopping at picturesque pubs and tearooms for local beer and Devon cream teas. Notable amongst the attractions are the delightful village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor, with its famous annual fair and beautiful ancient church, the 'cathedral of the moor'. Whether you wish to delve into the folklore and legend that fills the history of this magical place or simply enjoy the sunset from the vantage point of the tors, there is something for everyone, young and old.
