The Isle of Wight region
With the sunniest weather in the UK, 25 miles of clean, unspoilt beaches and half of it designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Isle of Wight is one of the best spots in Britain you could choose for a cottage break.
WALKING AND CYCLING
Bring your walking shoes and explore the 500 miles of well-marked walking paths and bridleways, with some of the UK's best walking. Visit during May and take part in the Isle of Wight walking festival (visit http://www.isleofwightwalkingfestival.co.uk).
The island has a 62-mile cycleway and is ideal for cyclists. If you don't want to bring your own bike, you can rent one in Ryde, Shanklin, Ventnor and other places.
Step back in time and discover dinosaur and other fossils during a visit to Yaverland, Brook Bay, Brightstone Bay and many other beaches.
PLACES TO VISIT
There are many historical places to visit, including Queen Victoria's island home, Osborne House (English Heritage), Carisbrooke Castle, where King Charles I was imprisoned before his execution, and a Roman villa near Brading.
While away the time at the excellent RSPB Bird Reserve, which attracts birders from across the country, or take a ride on the Isle of Wight steam railway.
ENTERTAINMENT FOR CHILDREN
The island is ideal for a family holiday and, apart from the island's numerous sandy beaches, the island abounds with attractions and things to do for children of all ages. Particularly worthwhile should be a visit to Blackgang Chine fun park (http://www.blackgangchine.com) on the island's south coast (a short drive from our cottage), which is the UK's oldest fun park and sports water slides, a roller coaster and a haunted castle. A saver ticket will give you access to Blackgang Chine as well as to Robin Hill, an adventure theme park. The Needles Park at the western most point of the Island is also a great day out - take a chairlift ride down to the beach and a boat ride to the Needles.
If your children enjoy animals, then consider a visit to Isle of Wight Zoo, Amazon World, Owl & Monkey Haven or Sea View Wildlife Encounter - just a few of the experiences available to you.
The south coast of the Isle of Wight, west of Ventnor, is the most tranquil and laid back part of the island. Relax over a leisurely lunch in one of the area's outstanding pubs after a visit to St Catherine's Lighthouse, built in the 1830s or, if you are feeling energetic, a walk up to St Catherine's Oratory (built in 1314), which stands at one of the island's highest points.
Compton Bay beach, a short drive from the cottage and best visited during low tide, is excellent for fossil hunting, walking, surfing and swimming. Relax on the beach and watch your children play amongst the many rock pools.
Well worth a visit is nearby Ventnor Botanical Garden (botanic.co.uk), with 22 acres of gardens and over 10,000 plants and an excellent cafe.
Your children will love Godshill Model village and Blackgang chine theme park, both less than 10 minutes' drive from the cottage.
There are many excellent walks in the south of the island. One of our favourite walks starts on the cottage's doorstep, up to the Hoy Monument (built 1814), along the downs, past St Catherine's Oratory and back home through a bluebell wood.
There are several great pubs nearby:
The White Lion is the nearest pub. It's in Niton, less than a mile away, you can walk there in about 20 minutes. It does great food and has a play area and bouncy castle for kids. (http://www.whitelionniton.co.uk)
The Buddle Inn – formally a smugglers retreat! With cosy log fires in winter and great sea views from the garden in summer. The Buddle is just under two miles away/less than ten minutes by car. (http://www.buddleinn.co.uk)
The White Horse Inn – Whitwell – is, truth be told, our favourite – does fabulous fish and chips. All the food is amazing and its warm, cosy and friendly. It's 1 mile away and less than five minutes by car. (http://www.thewhitehorsewhitwell.co.uk)

"Lovely house, beautiful garden and surroundings, brilliantly equipped."
We stayed at Ferndale with our 2 year old and tiny baby. It's a challenging travelling with small children but arriving a Ferndale we breathed a huge sigh of relief as it was so well equipped and had more than enough of everything we could need. Our 2 year old was delighted to find toys and books to entertain her (saved us taking lots) and the garden was a delight to explore for her and full of lovely relaxing corners for us when they were both in bed!
The house was comfortable, spacious, generous and very clean. It was very light and airy with huge windows giving spectacular views (beautiful from dawn til dusk and beyond!) and doors opening into the rather special garden but when the weather changed it was a lovely cosy place to be. The kitchen was roomy with plenty of stylish crockery etc to use if you had a full house and you had friends over for dinner in the dining room. Room for sandy beach stuff / wet weather gear in the garage and very convenient parking. Plenty of lovely walks to explore right from the door and lovely beaches, towns and villages just a short drive away. To top it all off at the end of the day - luxurious bed linen on really comfy beds.
A great place for a small or large gathering. What a treat to have this lovely home to enjoy. Thank you for sharing!

"Ferndale was the perfect home for my stay with my two young grandchildren!"
I stayed on the Isle of Wight with my son and two young grandchildren (4 and 7) The house was spacious, the bedrooms lovely, the living room so cozy! (We had a fire in the fireplace one chilly evening!) The views out of every window were spectacular - beautiful rolling hills and meadows. The kitchen had every appliance and utensil needed to make a gourmet meal! We would take lovely walks behind the house to visit with the sheep and lambs- which thrilled my grandchildren. Ferndale was located centrally so it was very easy to cover all the major attractions around the Isle of Wight. There is a little market in town that actually will deliver groceries! Patricia, the owner, made us feel so welcome through her warm and informative e-mails. We absolutely loved our stay at 'Ferndale!'

"The space of a house with the feel of a cottage!"
We had 4 nights at Ferndale with 7 family members and found the house to be absolutely perfect for a larger group of people. All of the bedrooms were very comfy and well furnished.
The views out the kitchen and living room windows make the interior feel spacious and full of light whilst still being a cozy spot if the weather turns ugly. We were lucky enough to get some sun during our stay and enjoyed one of the beautiful walks in the wood over the road.
The house is a quick drive from Niton and 25 minutes to the ferry at Fishbourne. Easy!
We will definitely be coming back, and can highly recommend Ferndale.

"Perfect house for holiday with kids old enough to explore!"
I travelled here with my Dad (in his 60's, fit and healthy) and my two children, aged 5 and almost 3.The house is very well equipped for children and adults, kitchen particularly is exceptionally kitted out inc. plastic cups, plates and bowls, and everything you could ever need for cooking and self-catering.
The location is great, especially for western beaches on the island. Compton Bay was our favourite, and we had such good weather that day we could've been in Portugal!
Having travelled last year with my mother who was wheelchair bound at the time, I would suggest that Ferndale is suitable for those with mobility problems (handrails everywhere are brilliantly placed) but I wouldn't recommend a visit should you have a need for a permanent wheelchair. There is the odd step up to here or down to there, which makes the house very quirky and is a lovely feature, but would not suit someone more infirm. However, Ferndale is a wonderful, captivating place with spectacular views and a lovely ambience, i'd love to visit again with a group of adult friends as well, it would be well suited to a large group.
Can't recommend the house highly enough; do it!!!

"Fantastic house, great garden, beautiful views"
We spent a very happy week here with two small children. It is certainly the best-equipped holiday cottage we have ever stayed in, and feels like a much-loved and well-looked after cottage. The children loved the large garden, and there is plenty of room inside for rainy days. And the views really are spectacular. The owners have equipped the house brilliantly, especially for those with small children - there is even a good range of toys and books. It is extremely well located for exploring the Isle of Wight, with plenty to do on the doorstep as well as further afield. The owners have left a good amount of information about the area, and their list of favourite walks, pubs etc provided an excellent guide - we particularly loved the bluebell wood only 50m down the road. We will be back!!
